the film portrays him as a very tragic figure, with all he went through it is quite sad...HBO is very biased though, still Louis's life story is very tragic, the man suffered a great deal.

Louis defended the Heavyweight title twice for training expenses ,his purses went to the Army ,and Navy relief funds .Buddy Baer donated a % of his earnings from his challenge too.
Can you see a current Champion defending his title twice for nothing?

Commendable and irrelevant ... he did not pay his taxes. I know people that do all kinds of volunteer work. They work in homeless shelters. They collect supplies and provide them free of charge to the public school systems. Should they not pay texes or just Louis because he was a celebrity ?

I know a thing or two about the doc business and in the height of the anti-Bush, anti-government 2000's some far left producers came up with the gimmic to sell yet another Louis doc. It flopped because it was so transparent.

Joe Louis could barely write his own name, according to some stories. Expecting him to manage his money correctly would be a near Herculean task. We can look at his poor spending and call it what it is, because we've taken advanced math, economics, or even pay our own taxes. But the fact of the matter is Louis was a near-illiterate man who had no idea what kind of money he was earning/spending, only that he was enjoying success and happiness that he never could have expected in his wildest dreams.

That said, his management team did know what Louis was spending. Either they weren't straight with him or he didn't listen to them like he should have. That's where the problem is.

Louis was uneducated but he was far from an idiot. He was irresponsible like most celebrities who come from nothing fast out of the gate. Without question his management could and should have looked out for him better but maybe they did. Maybe Joe simply did want he wanted. Without question it is tragic. That does not mean blame it on the qovernment.

Louis himself said if they say I owe it, I owe it.

Saying he owed what he owed and expecting him to honor debts is one thing.

Reclaiming his kids' trust funds intended for their education and intercepting his salaries for the already undignified work he was taking with the express purpose of paying off his debts - that's a step too far, IMO.

As for the portrayal of his career; I'm glad they made it a point to debunk the notion that his title defense record consisted of soft touches, and gave Conn in particular his due credit as a worthy challenger.

You're being harsh on him Bill. Louis entrusted the finances to other people...he was under the impression all this was being handled properly and being the innocent soul he was he didn't ever scrutinize anything. You can blame him for being naive but Louis didn't intentionally try to rip off the government.

The IRS clearly butt ****ed Louis and I don't know why anyone would argue other than blind patriots. The charitable donations should have been deductables, they could have at least used their discretion on those figures even if he owed other monies elsewhere

As for the middle class idiots, who probably were bought shares for their 1st birthday saying 'he should have known better', well yes if he was adequately educated in finance he would know better but no one ever told Louis about finance, he simply didn't have a clue.
