Joe Louis and Sonny Liston attend The Ed Sullivan Show together on Feb 16 1964 in Miami Beach. They attended the weekly show televised on Sunday night on CBS, it was televised in black and white as many shows back were not shown in color. They were in attendance to watch the second installment of The Beatles performing live on that telecast. Liston later made a remark about The Beatles long hair, he also said that his dog could play the drums better than Ringo Starr. This broadcast was 9 days before Liston lost his title to Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali) on Feb 25 1964 in Miami Beach, Florida.

We watched that telecast on Sunday Feb 16 1964 on our color television that was a Curtis Mathes, 25 inch. All of us liked The Beatles, my Dad watched the 19 inch Zenith Black and White in he and my mom's bedroom, he watched Bonanza. I now own the double DVD collection of all 5 broadcast of The Beatles appearances, including the whole Ed Sullivan shows including other guests and the commercials. Liston did look very annoyed during he and Joe Louis appearance.

Great company, I bought a brand new Zenith VCR in Jan 1990, it was cool it had on screen programming, it was one of the best VCR's that I ever had, it lasted 9 years.

They had some good products and they were American made. I remember some of their old full sized box tv’s. The casings were made out of wood. Heavy as hell but nice

    Fantastic recollections. Thanks Rich.

Ed Sullivan was before my time but I actually enjoy watching his shows and others on YTube - including Groucho Marx’s “You Bet Your Life” and John Daly’s “What My Line?” - so many great celebrities in a more natural setting - including a few great fighters from the day who randomly appeared on such shows

Purely for self preservation, if I had been in Liston’s presence on the night, I would’ve wholeheartedly agreed with his comments re Ringo. Agreed with anything that came out of Liston’s mouth, really.

Truth was, Ringo was actually an excellent/great drummer - the spine musician for keeping the rest of the band tight and in time.

I’ve read The Beatles literally couldn’t hear themselves singing/playing for all the screaming girls. LOL.

I think when Ali did that iconic shoot with the band he actually wasn’t too familiar with them - Ali being so egocentric, who would’ve guessed?

Could you imagine Liston having done a similar shoot with The Fab Four? LOL.
