Joe Louis would secude in any eara. First of all he's not small. Louis was 6'2" with a 76" reach. I was watching a youtube video where the person making it was explaining why in his opinion Louis was the best heavyweight ever and he suguested that people on avarage are now 2" taller than they were when Louis was born or something like that. If true that would make Louis 6' 4" with a 78" reach.
At his best Louis is near perfect. He's not flashy but he dose not make mistakes. He also has the power to take anyone out. The guys I'd conisider to beat Louis are Lenox Lewis, Riddick Bowe, Vitali Klitschko and Wladimir Klitschko. Basicialy guys who are bigger than he was and can use the outside to their advantage. Due to his chin being the best I might give the less regarded Bowe the best chance to beat him.

Louis wasn't slow. The technology of his day with respect to h is fight fight films doesn't accurately represent his speed. The same thing can be said of Jack Johnson and his fights. Live ring speed 50+ years ago does not represent what's on tape.

I think they were rating champions only. Odd Schmeling was so low.

Shommel with all due respect,READ BOXING HISTORY...Joe Louis ,was most likely the DEADLIEST puncher who ever lived. His jab could daze you, his cutting off the ring was second to none. Once he hurt you, the prime Joe Louis would send you to LaLa Land. Do you think boxing started with your generation? Do you think that for example,a Gene Tunney, Tommy Gibbons, Lee Ramage, Bob Pastor, Max Schmeling, Tommy Farr, Billy Conn, were devoid of boxing skills, making them primitive in skills compared to your
behomiths of today.? Do you think that the smallerweight boxers of yesterday
as Joe Gans,Young Griffo, Jim Driscoll, Abe Attell, Benny Leonard, Kid Chocalate,Tony Canzoneri, Barney Ross, Lou Ambers, Willie Pep,Kid Gavilan,
Billy Graham, Billy Soose, freddie Steele, Holman williams, Charley Burley,
and a host of other boxers of yesterday, were inferior in boxing skills, to your
ADVANCED skilled boxers of today, well I have the Brooklyn Bridge to sell you . Furthermore S, "OLD JOE", would do quite well today, thank you !
    Cheers S...

To be fair I think it's just a ranking of all the heavyweight champions up until that point.
