I am american as well. Most people confuse big names and star power with actual boxing talent. If these guys were all from around here, and everyone knew their names then people would act like they were great. Hell, people over here were acting like Guinn was a mixture of Holyfield and Mike Tyson before he showed his true colors. I was on here telling them everyday that he wasn't very good.
Why do these conversations seem to argue on speculations. Right now Vlad has not accomplished as much as Lewis or Louis. Now, he may before his career is over with. The Problem that Vlad will have is he will never have a strong person to fight against no great fights unless he fights until he is very old. gets beat by a younger person and thens avenges his losses. I do believe right now he fights a little smarter than Lewis did.
Well, it certainly looks like I missed a hell of a good debate, while I was out this evening. Good debates on both sides of the argument, but the majority of the support is clearly in favor of Louis ( as it should be ). I was glad to see my buddys from the classic forum taking a night out on the town in the general forum. I really appreciate the attention that this thread recieved.
The common concensus is that Wlad was knocked down 11 times in his career while Louis was only down 10, but if you wish to fudge things a bit, than so be it, because who cares? Louis in some 70 pro fights through the age of 37, was only stopped twice and down 10 times. Wlad through the age of about 28 and some 47 fights, was stopped 3 times, and floored anywhere from 8-11 times, depending on weather or not we're going with concensus claims or Widdow's. Whats more, Louis lost to hall of fame champions like Schmeling, Charles, and Marciano, ( 2 coming past his prime ), whereas Wlad was basically beaten by nobodies and right around his best. Nothing more to argue here.
Maybe a good bet, but let's face it, Louis had only been boxing for maybe two years, facing a former world champ, and taking it easy on the golf course as a result of his early success. He took Schmeling more seriously in the rematch, and knocked him out in one round. Wlad was Ko'd by a journeyman and not a former champion, around the same phase that Louis was in when he lost to Schmeling. Sure Ross was big and black, plus a modern day heavyweight, but nevertheless, Wlad had the same or similar advantages. You've made some good points Widdow, and you're a good guy, but for the record I am not a Wlad hater. You do however, need to change your views and think outside the box once in a while and show a bit more respect for fighters like Louis. I once thought the same way as you do. Thinking that old school fighters were inferior athletes, smaller, poorly trained, faced bums with horrible records, etc. Some of these things are certainly true, but sometimes a bit more about boxing can be discovered by going further than boxrec. I say this respectfully.
I don't find it very respectful because I have an entire library of boxing matches, old and new. I am not just a fan of current boxing, I am a fan of the sport of boxing. I used to post a lot in the classic forum when I first came to ESB. People just like to throw the "boxrec" tag on everything that someone says and it isn't respectful at all. I don't talk about "classic" boxing that much anymore because it has just been watered down with "Guy A vs Guy B" or " [insert old fighter] in today's division" threads. Nobody really seems to enjoy a nice logical discussion of boxing history as it stood. Everyone wants to compare and argue. I actually like to discuss previous boxing matches, previous boxing eras, ect... in the reailty in which they were. Not sit and argue with someone about how every ranked fighter from the past 100 years would walk in and be undisputed Champion in the heavyweight division today. I don't considered someone a better boxing fan, or a more knowledgable fan just because they bring up an old ATG fighter and talk about how much better he was than anyone today. I actually find it quite lame, redundant, and cheap. A cheap way to get people to think that they a knowledgable fan. Once again, I think that I am giving Louis plenty of respect. I have already said that he was great for his era, and that he is obviously far above Wlad on the ATG list as it stands right now. However, I refuse to play up to the nonsense that most are willing to do when discussing matters such as this. Which is why I hardly ever do it to begin with. Personally, I think that it's a cop out to always pick old fighters because you know that 80% of people are going to agree with you. However, 75% of them have absolutely no idea what they are agreeing about. They are just brainwashed to believe that guys from the past were so much better. As if humans were just created better back then. It's just silly. Now, if we are talking about SRR vs today's fighters at his weight... that's a different story. Talk about Rocky Marciano vs any guy today at a weight of 185 pounds... and again this makes perfect sense. I like to look at things in a realistic view. There isn't any need to play make believe and that a fighter who would be entering the ring at fight night about 10-15 pounds less than your average cruiserweight would just be able to walk through the Heavyweight division... especially with his style and vulnerabilities. Or to play the "if Joe Louis was around today he would be 6'7" 255 pounds" game. It isn't "showing respect" to blindly agree with that way of thinking. That is what I call being a follower.
By whom?! Jersey Joe Walcott & Ezzard Charles & Rocky Marciano are amongst the ATG heavyweights that fought in this era, are you high? Regardless, Louis dispatched more future and past champions (real champions, not just belt holders) than any fighter, ever.
Vitaly only ever lost by injuries. You cant really plan injuries, no one goes into a fight game saying, well Im going to hope his shoulder goes out, or I hope I can cut him. They happen. I cant see Louis stopping him, and Im not too sure about a UD 12 either.
It would be, if he didn't contradict himself at every turn. He desperately tries to come across as someone who isn't a biased nut-hugger yet if you ever read any of the threads where one of his fighters lost then you see just how big a 'fan of the sport' he really is. If you don't toe the Klitschko or Oscar line then you just get insulted and called a heter.
Widow's not that bad of a guy, he just has a short temper and isn't always very mature when discussing certain topics, but I can see that he's more serious about the sport than some people I've spoken to on forums. Like everything else, I just let people say whatever they feel, and I'll either agree or disagree. It's not worth getting pissed about. Anyway, this has turned out to be a very good thread, and I appreciate your contribution to it fighting weight...
I would favor a 210 pound prime Louis over all these guys today. Klitschko would be his toughest test.
I don't have a short temper at all. I just have a straight forward way of talking. I have a smile on my face all the time that you can't see. It is hard to convey that emotion over a message board so you will read a post and take it as you will. As I stated before I may call people "morons" or "******ed" on this message board, because that is exactly how I would be talking to my friend at home if we were having this discussion. It's nothing personal and I have nothing against any of you guys. I certainly don't get "pissed" while posting on this message board. I am very passionate about the sport however. Now... if you want to talk about a great fighter from the past who I have defended at every turn on this site. Look no further... [YT]60GuoYpmbJo[/YT]
