Just out of curiosity, why is Hide so disliked in the UK? I always thought that he had the makings of a good fighter, albeit not much of a chin.
I can only speak from a UK perspective and all I can say is the coverage over here is great providing you've got Sky and the sports channels - a lot of the fights the American have to pay for, we get for free. There haven't been many WALD fights shown free, in fact there haven't been many shown at all, the last one was shown as I mention above, and he didn't exactly win friends and fans with that one. Not bashing WALD (even though it was a **** fight) but you won't make friends with matches like that - even Steward knew it.
"Moot"? "Moot"? It's "moot" because Joe weiged between 181 and 214 in his career? Not because Joe Louis is dead?
Louis weighed 201 when he drilled 250lb bear. This is something like five pounds less than Frazier in Ali one isn't it? "Moot"? "Moot"?
That just goes to show how stupid we are over here. Of course, I myself would not shell out 60 American dollars to see a pay per view fight knowing damn well that it will be shown on HBO one week later for nothing. If I log onto ESB and here that the fight was total ****, then I won't even bother watching it at all.
He had his plus points, he was an entertaining fighter and he had that disabled kid he used to have ringside every fight and all that....but he had several run-ins with the law, assault charges filed against him and another bizarre case where I think he tried to smuggle immigrants into the country for money or something like that. He's a little bit unhinged is Herbie, he also used to call out and insult Frank Bruno every chance he got, which was a big no-no because for some reason Bruno was God-like over here. I still think the British public never entirely forgave Lewis for beating Bruno sometimes. We love a loser over here.... I could make the obvious joke about loving a loser should mean WALDS name is on everyones lips but seeing as we're being nice tonight I'll bite my tongue.
A lot of people are saying it. When Haye beat Enzo the expert panel over here were all saying that the only thing he has to fear in the heavies is Klitschko, and even then it would be a 50-50 fight like the Maccarinelli fight was. We'll have to wait and see. Having said that Haye is a bigger man than Louis was, but not by much :yep
With the advancements in nutrition, weight lifting, and sadly enough, HGH, he would be fighting today at 220-225, considering he was around 6'1 and a half, which is almost the same as two of the 3 current title holders we have today, Chagaev and Peter. If guys like Holyfield, Moorer, and Toney can fight well at Heavyweight, so can a superior fighter in Louis.
This is what really makes me laugh about the Klit-ites....they act as if being 6 feet 5+ is a remarkable break-through that only happened around 1995 or something
I know, size seems to be there only arguement anymore, it must suck to be 6'6 - 6'7, and possess so little toughness and heart at the top level. I used knock Lewis when I was a little younger for not having the killer instinct, after watching more of his older fights I took back what I said before, he took everything from guys like Bruno, Briggs, Mercer, and even Vitali, yet he still kept his composure and found away to win, and knockout 3 out of 4 of the them, comparing Lewis to Wlad in toughness, is like comparing a Mountain Lion to a ***** cat.
Lewis's nickname wasn't the lion for nothing :deal In his earlier days Lewis was a lot more explosive than he was in his later days....he got the same treatment WALD is getting from Steward and fought more cautious later on but was still capable of taking someone out if need be. Difference was he had a great heart and a decent chin. WALD certainly has the heart I don't deny this, but the chin is not good, not good at all. He also doesn't have the arsenal that Lewis brought to the ring, which is why I think it's amusing when Klitschko nut-huggers claim they're not nut-hugging but they'd pick WALD over Lewis. WALD doesn't hold a single advantage, he quite literally only has a punchers chance, just like Rahman and McCall had and they both got dealt with in short order in rematches.
