I agree, though with most Wlad nuthuggers, size is a big issue for them, so I pretty much was forced to bring up advancements in technology to somehow convince Widdow that Louis would be fighting at a similiar size as both Brewster and Peter, two guys that gave Wlad hell in the ring, but were far less talented as a prime Louis.
Fair enough pal. The thing is, for me, it's neither here nor there. Size is a serious factor in boxing, no question. But it's not so important as - heart; composite punching; chin; strength of will; good footwork; economy; stamina, etc., etc., etc. I think Wlad might actually **** in his trunks if he was confronted with Joe Louis.
Louis would dominate everyone but wlad. imo, that would be an even matchup where we could see a great series of fights. louis was sumpremely skilled but wlad's size is a huge advantage. now i dont think size counts for everything, but wlad is one of the most physically talented hws ever. so his size can come into play as he has learned to use it to his advantage. the giants louis faced were no where near as skilled as wlad. at the same time, wlad has never faced a skilled combination puncher like louis. wlad would control the fight from the outside and louis would have his way inside. the winner would be the one who can control the distance. this is where wlad has improved greatly. today, he uses his left arm extended to slap his opponents head down during a rush. he has done that very effectively against brewster and sultan. louis seemed less reliant on foot movement but id like to hear from louis experts like Mcgrain or Mendoza regarding his "control of distance". wlad's size and strength has me thinking he could smother louis inside. louis looked like he needed space to land effectively. Perhaps wlad would be able to spoil much of his offense with clinching. at the same time, an uppercut could put wlad down in the same situation. sam peter, the last man to have any success vs wlad did his damage from bull rushing wlad. that's not louis' style as he was much more refined, skilled and patient. moreover, his chin wouldn't hold up to some of those bombs wlad landed. neither man has a great beard. hard to argue whose was better or worse. wlad has been down 11 times but probably 1 time legit in the last 6 fights, which i consider his prime. he has faced good punchers in peter, brock, brewster. byrd and sultan were slick and awkard southpaws. louis was kd several times but showed he could take big shots at times. hard to get a read. i think being shook up and staggered badly by a 168 pound billy cohn is more of a red flag than any kd or ko. the x-factor might me wlad's tendacy to panic when hit. at that point, louis could do his best work although wlad is still not an easy target as he runs arms-extended and clings to his opponent like an octopus :yep i think it would have been a great matchup. im sure Barneyrub and FightingWeight would agree
Wlad does have his problems, but he he really seems to bother you, is there someone better out there? I know he fights "scared ass", and I don't like that. Please advise. BTW, Wlad's too big and talented for Joe.
Wlads mental weakness would surely be a factor in a fight with one of the greatest Heavyweights of all time, plus the fact that Wlad cant handle pressure for ****, I cant see him taking too many punches without going into a panic attack and eventually being knocked out by the superior boxer in Louis'.
I dont think there's a Heavyweight out there that's better, which is why the Heavyweight divsion is so unpopular and seems to be a joke to most that watch it anymore. I have already said many times, Wlad is very skilled, possibly even ATG material physically, but mentally he's extremely weak, I never seen a guy who's considered elite by some, so afraid to get hit, and when someone does land a decent shot on him, he clinches and has panic attacks, which sometimes ends up with him going down several times, no wonder why he gets so little props in the states, his fighting style is almost laughable, a far cry from the warriors that fought in the previous decade.
that could certainly happen but wlad could certainly take out joe too. i doubt if they faced each other 10 times, one would go the distance. when a 168-pound staggers u, it's certainly not impossible for a guy like wald to ko him :think now, i do believe he has improved in his ability to avoid pressure since the peter fight. see my post above. but what we dont know, what will his reaction be when he gets hit hard again like peter did in the 10th round?
I think Wlad would have a chance of beating Louis, I'm not saying he wouldnt, but both men would be tested by the other, which fighter do you see as being mentally stronger? I know who I would pick. Wlad is a very powerful fighter, who is great when he's doing the hitting, but when things get a little rough, 9 times out of 10 Wlad falls apart, and trust me Kobe is God, history will repeat itself soon enough.
You've made a good post overall. I dont' have answers to all of your questions but I will pitch in. What Louis was extraordinarily good at was timing, not just timing the punch, but timing his moves on the way in. Louis had a way of gliding in (and out on the rare occasion when it was neccessary) at exactly the right moment. Now, against Wlad this is no easy task, as you've identified. He has a series of interesting tricks to smother his opponent without actually bringing him inside. The question is, how do these two thing interact, and how does Wlad's apparent reticence factor in? In my opinion they favour Louis, and the reason is simply that Louis doesn't have to lead with a punch. He can lead with a step, or crucially, a shoulder roll. The shoulder roll is to a degree a forgotten art. But Louis used it often, and he used it primarily to slip a punch or a defensive lead of any other sort. He was a bit of a master. He could punch, affectively of the back of it. I'm not saying that this is as simple as crowd, shoulder roll, punch - Wlad has good feet - but here is one way that Louis can control the space. Some will tell you that Louis' footwork is poor. I see it as economic and pefect in relation to the task at hand. He was a wonderful judge of the range. Dead wrong, the only weak part of your post. Louis is lethal, lethal, lethal in the circmstances you describe. He is rated all time #1 composite puncher by ring magazine. I disagree. I think Langford and Tyson were better but in this situation, the one you describe above he is the most lethal man who has ever lived. Faar tied him up though. That would maybe be the fight that Wlad should look at if he wants to see how Louis could be best neutralised inside. Louis still beat him handily though. Louis could do it when needed. See Walcott II. Louis has the better chin. The only way to stop him is a sustained beating. Schmeling knocked Louis unconcsious early in their first fight. Louis fought on for a number of rounds on autopilot Let's not forget Schmeling had killed with that right. Marciano is an ATG puncher, and Louis was old and slow when he took him on. Again, a sustained beating was what put him down. Fair point. It should be pointed out that Louis was back and punching as well as any man who ever lived within minutes though!
I'm not saying it will be Peter, or even someone who's top 10 level, I'm guessing it will be someone who has been fighting under the radar for awhile, I guy who has nothing to lose and everything to gain, and understands that he will have to take a ton punishment, just to land his own punches.
Wald did not have a bum of the month club. He has mandatories to make, and can't be as active as Louis was. If Louis were around today, I think he's one of the champs but would have the same politcs problems as everybody else, and would be grilled for some of his not so great performances.
I agree with this. Don't you think he is one of those get it done type of fighters though? Can win without needing to be at his best?
Yep. Wlad is good enough to breeze though top ten fighters. I don't see him losing for at least two more years.
I just checked boxrec to see who would win this matchup. Louis was 6 feet 2 and WALD is 6 feet 6. WALD is also heavier, with bigger muscles and a far sexier haircut. WALD wins by knockout.
