Joe Louis is still the greatest combination puncher in heavyweight boxing history

Aside from Louis at # 1 (imo), Jack Sharkey could put his punches together very nicely in combinations and with heat - one sterling example would be the combo he put to Dempsey in round 1 that saw Dempsey stagger back across the ring, with the bodily rigidity of a rag doll.

    Random thought.

Are we getting to (or have already arrived at previously) the point in which we might delineate between younger Usyk and older Usyk?

In some way, a similar treatment that entails the distinction between young Foreman and old Foreman and, also even, pre and post exile Ali?

Olek is a significantly physically larger and strategically modified fighter as compared to what he was, in his prime, as a CW.

His mobility, hand speed and reactions have slowed but that fact isn’t as apparent in the face of slower and less mobile SHWs ( as compared to Usyk’s CW comp.).

Per deteriorations and voluntary election, he has clearly traded mobility for greater size and related, better leveraged power.

So, being realistic, we can’t necessarily combine and apply the CW and HW versions of Usyk as the one, all complete fighter.

Certainly, rightly or wrongly, there are those who don’t allow for a combo of young Ali and old Ali when drawing their own lines between his pre and post exile careers.

He faced 'inferior boxers' in his own time and they kicked the **** out of him.

I'm not suggesting he'd have no success at all in an alternative period of boxing history. There has been and always will be a fair proportion of lower-end competitors in the sport.

But Joshua has proven to be run-of-the-mill in a somewhat bereft era. Save for his body-built size, he's quite ordinary.

And, when you carry the kind of fragility in the chin department that he does, he's going to be there to be beaten - it matters not what era he's in.

Love Joe Louis, always have, I have always praised his offensive capabilities.
However, it would be hypocritical of me to simply overlook his opponents, knowing they were not the best . Like Marciano, it was no fault of his the competition wasn't as challenging as other era's. He fought and destroyed ( The way he was supposed to by the way) who was available.
Can't ask much more from him than that.
