Yes, saying Ali is #1 at HW is non-debatable is like saying SRR is the GOAT and that can't be debated.

 

Nice clips of his lesser known fights. The first clip, Ramage II, shows that he could handle slick movers perfectly well. The idea that he was a leaden-footed robot who the likes of Ali and Holmes would dance rings rounds is just nonsense.

 

Joe Louis holds the record for consecutive successful title defences, one of the oldest standing records in all sports. Not Ali, who lost several fights in his prime.

I won't say the non-debatable part, but i agree with Addie on Ali at number one. No disrespect to Louis, Ali's resume is tremendous though, makes me howl when people talk it down.

 

Yeah, Ali is #1 clearly for me as well. You just can't beat Liston X2, Frazier X2, Foreman. Any one of those five wins is arguably better than any one of Louis' wins! And then Ali has nearly as many really really good wins: Patterson, Quarry, Bonavena, Lyle - all real quality stuff there.

 

Exactly, he was the best heavyweight in not just a golden era(70s), but another good era as well(60s). And like you said, his best wins are outstanding, one of the best fighters ever bar none p4p. He ranks below some in that regard, but it's only testament to what those fighters achieved, not to Ali being lesser as a fighter.

 

Well, you could argue Schmeling actually did. Convincingly so. Many of Louis' fans argue that Baer was his best perfomance and the Schmeling fight was shortly after, so...
