Nice footage. Thanks man. Lewis was quite fearful before the fight. Correct? Though Joe is given credit for having fast hands I think Louis’ hand speed is still underrated - particularly considering that each shot was loaded, no fluff punches. One can say fighter X has “fast” hands. But how fast and via what type of delivery system? Like, there have been plenty of fast hands at HW and then there was Ali’s prime hand speed - and Patterson’s too - both in another class again. IMO, Louis’ hand speed was in that other class also. That’s part of the reason why I think Louis would present as a lot tougher opponent for Ali than he is generally given credit for.
Eddie Futch before the Spinks fight said Mike Tyson had the fastest hands he’d seen on a heavyweight since Joe Lous. And Eddie saw ‘em all.
Save that footage that’s by far the best footage of that fight on the net. Hopefully it’s not removed. Everyone always disregards this fight because of Lewis’s eye. But he was still a class fighter on a winning streak with over 100 career wins. And Joe chopped him up in like two minutes. Wasn’t even competitive.
Is there other footage of JHL? Seems like he gets overlooked a lot when people talk about light heavyweight rankings/legacy.
There's supposed to be footage of the rematch with Braddock from a documentary but I think it got damaged. They had to pay actors for the scene in the Cinderella Man film.
Oh, and there's the clip of him shadowboxing. And a couple of clips of him defending his title but there all about fifteen seconds long and poor quality.
You make a interesting point, for sure Louis would have given Ali a very tough fight indeed, I still ( and always have ) believe that as great as Joe was, he would have come up short against " The Greatest " IMHO. Stay safe buddy.
There's some of him training for the cancelled Galento fight (or atleast it was shown in that context,)
