Joe Louis was 136 years old for that fight, Rocky came up soon afterwards. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWWw9LffCFY
Louis was 35, he had announced his retirement on March 1st of that year. From Jan 1st he had engaged in 28 exhibitions for a total of 136 rounds. On Mar the 16th he had kod Elmer Ray in 4rds .Prior to Valentino Louis had just done a 10 rounder ex against Johnny Shkor followed by 2 more ten rounders against Joe Chesul and Johnny Flynn. He had a further 5 ex's that year with Roscoe Toles,Johnny Flynn,Al Hoosman ,[ he kod Hoosman],Jay Lambert and Rex Layne. Louis's next 2 fights were with Charles on Sep 27th 1950 ,followed by Cesear Brion Nov29 that same year. Louis did not fight Marciano until Oct 26th 1951. ps It is a funny sketch.
-Yeah, but you say that is irrelevant in the Maricano/Louis threads. -Yep, he was blind after the Charles fight.
Valentino was a good contender and had just gave Charles a hard fought for the World Title. Unforunately, he did lose the sight in his right eye from that brutal encounter and would be forced to retire. He viewed this "exhibition" as his last chance. Of course, this really wasn't an exhibition but a genuine fight, despite his handicap, Valentino fought as hard as he could. Lee Oma was supposed to face Louis on this tour but watching this match, he realized it was no exhibition and said he would not get in the ring with Louis unless he was paid a proper salary. Loius also knocked future top contender Valdes out in one of these "exhibitions" Layne also had a very excellent showing against Louis in one.
Joe Louis was still a world beater when he fought Marciano .... don,t know why people think he wasn,t
Valentino suffered a torn retina against Tony Bosnich it was their rubber match.Valentino then won a grueller against Turkey Thompson who had previously stopped him, this was 2 months after the Bosnich fight. Recuperating while his eye healed, he was offered a title shot against Charles .Valentino, with the prospect of being out a year took the shot and incurred permanent blindness in his right eye as a result. Valentino had only a month to train for Charles. Valentino got $5000 for Charles ,Charles $40,000 Valentino received $7,500 for his "exhibition ,"with Louis, more than he ever made in a fight. Louis had two exhibitions with Valdez the first was 1949 on Jan28th in Tampa it went the 4 rds distance. In1950 he again went the 4rounds distance with him on Feb 7th in St Petersburg. Pretty sure I've told you this before. Louis boxed 2 exhibitions with Layne ,both in Salt Lake City, on Dec21st 1949 &Jan24th 1950, the first was over 5rds the second over 4 rds , both went the distance. N. B . Louis boxed a 4rds exhibition in LA with Harry Wills ,this was Jun23rd 1947
No. Louis knocked out Valdez in 1 on the March 14th exhibition in Houston, Texas. http://www.cyberboxingzone.com/boxing/jlouis.htm
Valdes you've got me saying saying Valdez now. Not according to Joe Louis in his autobiography. "Joe Louis My Life".
Valdez is the Spanish spelling. If you want to add the "s" it would technically be "Valdés" Well, according to Cyberboxing Zone and other sources it happened. I wouldn't trust an autobiography. You said Henry Cooper claimed to jab Clay back into the ropes to set up the left hook and score the knockdown and that didn't happen. Don't tease us. What does Joe Louis say on the matter? Did he just fail to mention it? Fighting the same man three times in a busy period of his life, its possible he made a mistake.
More references mentioning 3 not 2 fights. His name also spelled as Valdez. One of the big thrills of Nino's life was having boxed three exhibitions with Joe Louis in 1949 and 1950. Valdez always spoke about the Brown Bomber with reverence http://www.cyberboxingzone.com/boxing/jlouis.htm Fine. But it looks like your wrong. You don't want there to be a third fight where Valdez is knocked out because you feel it hurts you impression of Louis at this time.
Newspaper article mentioning "Valdes" being KOed by Joe Louis in 1950. McVey, it is not looking good for your claim. http://news.google.com/newspapers?n...gMaAAAAIBAJ&sjid=gSMEAAAAIBAJ&pg=4902,2959890
