Lee Q. Murray was a switch-hitter ala Marvin Hagler and had TNT in his right hand. If I could see Louis fight any HW from the 40s that he hadn't already, I'd pick Murray. Yes, even over Elmer Ray, Lem Franklin, Curtis Sheppard and the rest. It would be interesting to see how Joe dealt with Murray once Lee Q. went southpaw.
.....it was not a sparring session with elmer ray...it was an exhibition and ray landed a couple of hard hots on louis, which, shall we say irritated him and louis knocked him flat.
I'm pretty sure that's a myth. The closest Louis came to knocking out Elmer Ray was in the last of their three exhibition bouts when Ray couldn't answer the bell for the fourth round. Ray was at the end of the trail, having suffered a 9th round knockout by John Holman the previous week, and never boxed again.
Joe Louis actualy knocked Elmer Ray out twice in exhibitions! The first time was 01/Feb2/1949 in Jacksonville Florida, and the second time was 16/Mar/1949 in Jacksonville Florida. Perhaps Ray got ****y twice with the same results?
It's just not true. Here's an account of the first of those bouts: ****://news.google.com/newspapers?id=qBQmAAAAIBAJ&sjid=sf0FAAAAIBAJ&pg=3167,4105043
This article suggests that Ray finished the exhibition on his feet, though it is not a local source, and it is four days after the event. It obviously dosn't say anything about the Jacksonville exhibition.
Ok, here's the AP report of the same bout: ****://news.google.com/newspapers?id=GbcqAAAAIBAJ&sjid=qGQEAAAAIBAJ&pg=3604,6167472
To my knowledge Ray fought three exhibitions with Louis that year: Jan 25, as six rounder in Miamia, with Ray finishing on his feet. Feb 1, a four rounder in Jacksonville, some sources say that Ray was stopped Mar 16, a four rounder in Houston, some sources say thar Ray was stopped. Taking into account the sources you have put forward, the problem might have arisen from people confusing the Jacksonville bout with the Houston bout.
I'd say that's a fair assessment. In that third bout, it's scary that Ray was allowed to get into the ring with Joe Louis so soon after being knocked out in his final competitive contest. Immediately afterwards, his manager requested that the NBA withdraw his licence for his own safety.
I have a very rare interview of Joe Louis and Max Schmeling being interviewed ringside at the Ali-Mildenberger fight in Germany. Howard Cosell says to Louis that he didn't want to fight southpaws: youtube.com/watch?v=7Z76TYHfM8o This content is protected
This is absolutely priceless! We have you banging on about GunboatSmith tkoing Jack Johnson in a sparring match and saying he should have gotten a title shot,[though he only ,according to himself,] put Johnson through the ropes,Yet Louis ko's Ray in an exhibition and it doesn't count!" I'm so pleased I found this blatant example of palpable double standards by you! HYPOCRITE!
