Really funny on how Foreman mentions Ali never learned defence and I don't think he even hit Ali 3 times clean. Everything else grazed Ali or didn't hit him at all.
Do you need glasses? He hit Ali with punishing shots to the body over and over and some to the head as well.
The author is Louis nuthugger by the sounds of it. He uses the jab as the reason Louis stands a chance, but Louis jab is nowhere near as good as Liston's for instance and he doesn't use it well at all, Ali's jab and counter right would be all over Louis. Louis wouldn't do any better than Liston . This is the only Louis quote in the article, the rest is biased arguments from the author using irrelevant comparisons mainly from past Ali's prime. Ali is far harder to hit than Joe and far quicker. Footwork controls boxing matches and Louis didn't have the feet to get anywhere near the fleet footed Ali.
First of all Liston is incomparable to prime Louis. Joe was a far greater fighter with a far better jab. Liston could only come straight in with his jab. Louis could side step, jab, hook off that jab and box very effectively with it. I rate Ali and Louis side by side as the ultimate of all time hwt greats. Its important that both fighters skills be accurately discussed. The comments here do not accurately portray these skills in any way shape or form.
Louis jab is nowhere near as good as Liston's, nowhere near. He gives up his height, stands square and doesn't step into, he doesn't double it either, Liston trebles his at times. It's certainly by far Joe's worst punch. Liston's punch travels much further with his greater range quicker and he steps into it. Louis also often leaves his jab out taking too long recoiling, making easy to counter with right hands, ala Walcott/Schmelling
Ive read the article before. Interesting read and perspective. You can certainly argue either way, that Louis would use his Jab, timing, feinting, strategy, combos, to neutralize Ali. Or, that Ali's speed and chin would be too much. The article does make me favor Louis though. Its very interesting, devising the perfect strategy and mastery of fundamentals to neutralize sheer athleticism.
I suggest you watch Louis a bit closer. First off Louis jab is always rated right up there with Ali as the very best all time. Suggest you watch his bout with Max Baer as he displays a boxers jab...sidestepping, blocking and countering....you will see double and triple jabs also....Louis was the greatest combination fighter in boxing history by the way. Listons jab may have been harder but that's very subjective but technique wise there is no comparison. Liston was robotic and one dimensional stepping straight in at all times. Louis could step in but also box beautifully if he had to using his jab as an offensive or defensive weapon. These reasons among others are why Liston is rarely rated top ten while Louis is always first or second all time. Different class of fighter really. Louis exhibited all time great skills in many ways never equaled in the hwt division while Liston really is never mentioned in this regard. Your the first person in my 40 plus years of covering boxing that stated Louis jab was his worst punch....a punch universally called by every boxing trainer I've ever spoken with as one of the top jabs in boxing history. This would include Dundee, Futch and Arcel. Futch and Arcel told me they felt Louis jab was the best. Dundee of course favored Ali but he placed Louis in the number two spot.
i can see where louis would be a slight favorite and one reason was what the author mentioned is louis fast hands. another is ali would be a bigger target than say a conn or pastor were. id put some money on louis 2 out of three times- just not very much
muhammad ali would beat joe louis and i have not doubt in my mind, ali was too tough, physically and mentally, he was bigger, faster, probably even stronger, he would handle louis in the clinch , he could avoid louis with his speed, he had great stamina, a great jab, hitting power enough to hurt louis badly with combinations, louis was too static to catch ali,joe louis was a great finisher but he could not hit a peak ali enough to stop him later. ali wins... by ud, or late tko by he wins..
I agree with "Ali getting hit a lot in his prime". You watch the old vids of Ali and he is getting hit a lot vs Guys like Jones and Quarry. The difference is that Ali doesn't react to getting hit, the punches landing on Ali seemed to have the damaging effect of a fly landing on him. History shows this was an allusion as we see now Ali can't walk or talk. No warrior gets out of boxing unscathed, they all exhibit brain damage symptoms.
