His footwork was good. His balance couldve been better. That was one of his few weaknesses.

12 year title reign, 25 title defenses, all this donme tih time missing from his career serving our country... Absolutley! Plus TNT in both fists, pinpoint and sharp combinations. Devastating in rematches, he is either at the top of the list of heavies no less than #2. He was the consumate, boxer/puncher. Without a doubt, top ten all time great ...

He won 26 championship fights in a row. That's not an easy thing to do. He wasn't flashy by any means, and yes he's been down and counted out. I would conseder that a result of being a heavyweight more than a lack of defense or a chin. He was great at controling distance, and knew not only how, but when to punch. The big athletic champions Bowe, Lewis and Wald Klitchko beats him. I don't like how Vitily is slow with his jab, and therefore I belive Louis would get the better of him. The only reason those guys beats Louis is that they are bigger, stronger and faster, but by no means greater than he is.

So Bowe, Lewis, Vlad beats Joe louis because they are bigger, stronger and FASTER than the incomparable Joe Louis ? Louis hit twice as fast as these three, and anyone the Brown Bomber hit, he kos...First it's Dempsey, now Joe Louis who many on ESB shortchange...Who next, Ray Robinson...?
So many posters are consumed with SIZE. A Dempsey, a Joe Louis did better against bigger men than smaller elusive boxers,as Tommy Gibbons,
Gene tunney, Bob Pastor, Billy Conn etc and to say that a Bowe, Lewis, Vlad hit faster than Louis is ludicrous...No man whoever lived, combined
dynamic power, leverage and HANDSPEED as Joe Louis did. No one ...

How could he not be? 25 titles fights...champ from 1937-1949...probably the most perfect puncher of all time...watch his feet...he always seems to be in position to land those brutal combinations...never seems to be off balance...great fighter...

There were way too many all time great fighters in other divisions. I don't think it'd be that hard to find 50 names of more deserving all-time P4P.

Oh, how short memory is ! At his best via the Max Baer era, Joe Louis was most likely the greatest puncher who ever lived...Size is B.S. No 240 pound mastodon will ever combine the speed, leverage and power that the 200 pound prime Joe Louis possessed...
Nature doesn't allow it .....Only a prime Dempsey and Mike Tyson were in his league as
swift punching destroyers...As far as strength goes, Joe Louis once lifted Primo Carnera off his feet and deposited Da Preem out of a clinch....But SPEED KILLS in the vast majority of cases....
P.S. I must quote a physician attached to boxing during Joe Louis's reign. "The human body was not made to survive the punches of Joe Louis once he hurt you ".
My favourite heavyweight ever as a fighter and a man who never gloated over a fallen opponent....As a youngster Louis was more beloved and respected by the American public
than any fighter ever...For a GOOD REASON...

I don't understand, how anyone can say, that balance was one of his weaknesses.

On the contrary, if he missed with a punch, he was always in position to follow up with another and another and... Didn't fire wild, lounging punches that left him off balance or tangled up with an opponent, so he had to regroup and start all over. His balance was excellent! And of course he must rank as easily the best "short" puncher ever - no one, before or since, has been able to put that kind of power into punches that short!
