If Bowe as we knew him fought in the late 30's, early 40's, would this have ended up being a trilogy?

Never seen Joe fight too well inside, or maybe not at all. I personally think Bowe would win the trilogy. He outslugs Louis on the inside first time around, but gets outboxed and totally schooled second time around. The third one is a toss-up, tho I slightly favor Bowe. All slugfests.

I guess it depends on what happens in the first bout

I would like to make Joe Louis the favorite and I think this is appropriate. Both guys specialized on the in-fighting game but Louis was a master at it while Bowe lacked in defense. Those fast combinations would cause a lot of damage. But Bowe was durable and could crack pretty hard as well. I think it would be a very tough fight but I think Louis might win by a late stoppage

He was good with those short 1 and 2 inch punches, but he was no inside brawler like Fullmer and Bert Cooper. Joe was at his best far off from his opponent.

This is wildly wrong. Everyone has made an embarrassing mistake on the forum at some point and you shouldn't be too miserable about it. But Joe Louis is beyond all question the best, second best, third best or fourth best infighter in heavyweight boxing history. Ish. Maybe ou could make argument he was sixth or something? But that's about it.

Look again, and don't post again until you've looked again is my sincere advice.

Having said that, Louis set a comparatively low bar, for giving an opponent a rematch.

Competitive rather than controversial was sometimes enough.
