I know this is a bit of a ask but I don't know much about Joe's wins besides ones afainst former champions like Baer, Carnero, Schmeling etc. Could people label some of his mid tier wins as well and what type of fighter they were against? I'm going to watch more of his fights and would like a little info on his opponents during his title reign. Thanks
Honestly man, looking at his resume, i think he's grossly overated. I mean yeah he beat Max, but lost to Rocky, Had some good fights against Walcott, but overall I think he beat who he beat, which overall wasn't that great. He did his thing for his era, but even in that I don't think he did enough to get the greatest heavyweight ever title. I think it's appropriate to give Ali that title bar none with Jack Johnson coming in 2nd or maybe a tie with Lennox Lewis or Larry Holmes. I would rank Joe around 5th all time as far as heavyweights. I think if you look at his 25 title defenses, you'll agree that there are very few highly regarded fighters on that list..
1. Max Schmeling II 2. Jersey Joe Walcott II 3. Billy Conn I 4. Max Baer 5. Jersey Joe Walcott I 6. Bob Pastor II 7. James Braddock 8. Lou Nova 8. Primo Carnera 9. Tommy Farr 10. Buddy Baer II 11. Arturo Godoy II 11. Tami Mauriello 12. Abe Simon II 13. Tony Galento 14. John Henry Lewis 15. Nathan Mann 16. Al Ettore 17. Gus Dorazio 18. Jack Sharkey 19. Charles Retzlaff 20. Lee Ramage II HM: Lee Savold, Cesar Brion II
Nice :good I've heard Lou Nova was some kind of hot prospect until Louis derailed him? It looks like he's one of Louis better wins not over a champ/former champ so you must rate him highly.
