Louis had a pretty good rear guard defense, and had a way of suckering a man in while delivering a power punch, increasing the impact of the blow. He also had a good shoulder type of defense to cover up his chin from one side.

There is no doubt Louis had speed and power in both hands, and was technical in how he delivered all punches. But Louis had a certain range he liked to work in. A slippery opponent with good footwork who stayed outside Louis punching radius could give him some problems. If Louis ever faced a much bigger man with a quality longer jab and power, I think he's in some trouble. You could say he was a master of a certain range ( mid range when the other guy had his feet planted ), but far less effective outside his comfort zone.

Some people think Louis was a technically flawless fighter. This is false. Louis stance, low guard, and stick his chin style forward are big no-no's. His failure to pull his jab back quickly, and mechanical like shuffling are far from flawless.

Louis really was not much of an independent thinker in the ring. He was slow to adapt in some of his toughest fights, and often needed a re-match and Blackburn's orders to get the result he should have in the first match.
