Joe Louis, Underrated or just not that great???

Far too much is made of Louis' "close fights". Not that it isn't unsurprising that, out of 25 title defences against the best the world had to offer, one or two fights posed a difficulty. There is really no fight that one can with certainty declare to have been a gift or robbery of sorts, which is, given the above consideration, impressive if anything.

 

Part of your problem is you are going on Box rec. The other problem is you can't count.


Donovan was the ref in more than ten of Louis fights you dolt. Can we wager here? As I said before good old Art only gave Tommy Farr 1 of 15 rounds. Sure he was fair and competent. NOT.


If you know something about boxing, you would know the ref scored fights back then. There is scoring ya know even if there is a knockout.


As for shady scoring, that is best determined looking at the score cards than watching the fights, which as we know in many cases you have not seen what I have seen. I have seen 15+ Joe Louis fights.

Fantastic that this thread has gone on for so long. Louis was the best or the second best HW of all time. Of that there can be no question.

As how ATGs of different times would do against each other, I think discussions like that tend to be taken a little bit seriously. It's fun to discuss but ultimately so riddled with guesswork that you shouldn't get to worked up about it.

For me, a more interesting question is if Louis should be ranked top 10 p4p. I think there's a strong case to be made for having him there.

 

he tended to stick out more in a weak era. in a division with better talent he probably wont last as long 10 years champion. For me his chin stuck out as a problem. Old timers like Dempsey and Johnson were more better

Mendoza hates Joe Louis. He rates the greats pretty low who fought from 1930-1960. Why? Beats me. Anyone who thinks Godoy beat Louis is kidding themselves. While not one of Louis' top performances, he still clearly won the fight.

 

i think it's a fair question to ask: if there was controversial scoring in louis' knockout wins, what were they? to be fair, i didn't know we had access to those records and i think it would be fascinating. the ONLY fight i know of that was remotely controversial was walcott 1. farr was not; he was simply praised for a herculean effort against a ****ing fighting machine that night. either way, for the most part louis settled matters conclusively with knockouts

 

Donovan's reading of the Farr fight was obviously wrong, but I don't think one dodgy performance should be enough to arouse suspicion, especially when it's already been pointed out that his other "controversial" scorecards (such as in Louis/Godoy I) actually reflected the consensus at the time.

 

well exactly. i've never really heard a lot of controversy about louis' reign. the farr fight was tough, godoy was awkward and walcott got him on the slide down.

 

Godoy himself, thought he was entitled to a draw , he never claimed victory.

Arthur Donovan was the premier referee in the US, apart from officiating as ref in Louis fights he also refereed 15 other title fights.
If he was not fair ,competent, don't you think he would have been found out ?
He is a member of the I B H O F, and the W B O H F.
As a boxer he fought both Tommy and Mike Gibbons ,Young Zulu Kid,Buck Crouse, and Augie Ratner.
His father Professor Mike Donovan was worlds middleweight champ.
His son Art was a pro football player and is in the Football H O F, I believe he is in his 80,s now.
I mention this because ,if he came on this forum I think it might cause him some distress to read your unfounded,and unproven comments, about his father.
Dont tell me about referees judging I live in the country that virtually invented the sport.

You would have to do some research for that. My comment was to our village idiot, McVey who said Donovan was the ref in 10 of Louis fights, which of course is wrong!!! Donovan in fact scored all the fights he was the referee in whether they went the distance or not. See the below quote.
