I have him at no2 behind Ali but I agree... seeing Louis anywhere from 3 downwards just looks harsh.

I don't have a problem with anyone rating him outside of the top 2! I have him at 1 and the majority do at 1 or 2 (with more of them at 2), but I have seen some make good arguments for Johnson (certainly realistic), Dempsey (although I have him at 6-7, seems reasonable to me....although he has many detractors here as well), Marciano as well. So his overall rankings seem to be many top 1 or 2, a vast majority top 3 or 4 not to bad or diverse showing his general rating should be in that realm.

H2H still baffles me as to why he gets seemingly less and less respect with each subsequent poll and match-up!

We're kinda into a period of Louis revisionism. However, last time ESB had a ATHvywt poll he was #2 easy, so obviously many still regard him highly.

Under-rated as a H2H force - namely the whole "poor footwork" "no head movement" myths - and in other respects - namely the "gift decisions" "last-gasp KO of Conn" myths. I don't think many people really understand Louis' style.

that seems to be the trend doesn't it? as stated just above me by itrymariti, people seem to focus on louis' flaws or weaker performances (which are for some reason famous) instead of the fighting machine from schmeling 2-conn. that louis was brilliant, flaws and all. no, he wasn't perfect but like most of the best, he took what he did well and did it SOOOO well that the rest didn't matter.

    Jackass,

1 ) Louis managers were mob connected, and had relations with MSG

2 ) The judging in his fights that were completive for Louis were at times suspect and slanted.

3 ) For the third time, I said I did not see the Haye vs. Ruiz fight yet, but that does not disqualify me or anyone from commenting on the news reads or posts here. You seem to have very authoritative opinions on dozens of fights you have not seen.

    Holyfield-Lewis 1 wasn't exactly Holyfield-Lewis 1 either !
It wasn't as bad as people make out. Kind of a tame fight, bad decision, but nothing to get so worked up about. It was ruled a DRAW, there wasn't a "loss" given to Lewis.
    I've seen a lot worse.
It was all contrived so they could both make more money anyway.

FACT. LOUIS HAD THREE FIGHTS IN MSG THAT WENT THE DISTANCE, TWO WHILE HE WAS CHAMP.
1937 Louis took a u dec off Bob Pastor who ran like a thief all night and fought only to survive, "Bobs Bicycle Act " no objective person would have given the verdict to Pastor ,[which means you may have].

1940 Louis beat Godoy by split dec.

The referee Donovan 10-5 Louis, judge George Lecron 10-4-1 Louis

    Judge Tommy Shortell 5-10 Godoy.

The New York Times 10-5 Louis ,as did several other leading papers.

1947 Louis beat Walcott by split dec.
Re Goldstein 6-7Walcott,[note how close Goldstein' s score was]

    Judge Frank Forbes 8-6 Louis
    Judge Marty Monroe 9-6 Louis

No one I know has seen the ENTIRE FIGHT,including you.

Now you tell me ,which of the judges were suspect and slanted ,as you say.

John Roxborough, was a numbers runner, that is his "mob connection" , as you put it

You have made some very nasty allegations about men long dead.
You have not produced ONE SHRED OF EVIDENCE,OR PROOF to back up your slander.

IF THERE IS A JACKASS HERE,IT IS YOU.

    HEE HAW :good

AND there are fight highlights on YouTube that are readily available and once again seem inconclusive, although I personally like Louis's cleaner work (like the judges).

    Bottom line.

I'm at a loss to see what Roxborough's connections could have brought him. ALL fight managers took at least SOMETHING to do with the mob in those days. If anyone stepped out of line, they lived to regret it. Whatever Roxborough's personal relationship with the powers that be (and do we know that he had one?), it should be seen as FAR less damning than Sugar Ray's PERSONAL relationship with Blinkey Palermo. Robinson is supposed to have personally apologised to Blinky for failing to carry one fighter far enough. I suppose this is evidence that the Kid Gavilan fights were fixed?

Most of the great fighters have mob-connected managers and promoters.
This is the fight racket after all.
There are crooks and non-legit persons everywhere in pro boxing.

And you dont have to go back to the 1930s to find them.

I don't think rating him at no 4 is exactly demeaning him myself.
I just think Dempsey beats him.

Walcott's manager Felix Bocchicchio was far more "Mob Connected",than Roxborough, he had a long list of arrests to his discredit, including for theft, jailbreaking, and murder,if anyone was likely to have influence, it would have been him.

Jim Braddock,Louis's predecessor as champ, had Joe Gould as a manager, Gould was a one time gopher for Dutch Shultz ,in1923, when killer , and racketeer Owney Madden got out of Sing Sing, Gould ,along with convicted murderer Arthur Bieler, was there to pick him up. Does that mean that Braddock's fights were fixed in his favour?

Bottom line, Joe Louis did not need anyone's help in winning fights, and to suggest otherwise is a slur on both him , his management, and the officials that presided over his bouts.
