Well, most people regard him as one of the two best Heavyweights in history (I have him at #2) so I'd say neither. He's regarded, accurately, as an ATG. His punching technique was impeccable - power, speed and accuracy all rolled into one and he's quite possibly the best finisher ever.
He would beat the living **** out of any heavy in history! I don't see Holmes winning a fight with him nor do I se Ali winning a fight with him. I see him beating Vitali but not by KO. I am not sure anyone could KO him. TKO cuts would be plausible IMO.
Jack Johnson was decked by a middleweight - stanley Ketchel - and was knocked into next week by th much smaller Joe Chyoinski. He also recieved a maladorous decison in France against tough challenger rank MOran. The ref Carpentier awarded him the decision ( likely due to popularity as Johnsonwas very popular figure in France) Johnson was aso a man that drew the color line when he was champ and avoided such fighters as Sam Langford and John Lester Johnson, in additon to Harry Wills ad JOe Jeanette.
Ali well... where do I begin: he was given gift decsions against Jimmy Young and Norton in their second fight. He was also destroyed by the aforementioned Norton. He was permitted to get away with murderosu holding adf head pushing agaisnt Joe Frazier in bout #2.
Ali also had to be rescued against the very limited Sir Henry Cooper by having his glove cut by Angelo Dundee. He also was decked by the limited Sonny Banks and also rcieved a very close and conraversial decsion in his fight with Doug JOnes
This man is affoded legendary status eparture from the reality of that is a bit of a departure from the relaity of his career.
No way Jimmy Young beat Ali first time i hear that is from you, Norton was very close no doubt, but you here are writing about post prime Ali!!! This is biggest MYTH ever Ali was on his feet at a count of 4 he was hurt no doubt, round ended and pause between rounds was 1 min 6 seconds(that happens in almost every fight multiple times), Dundee did try to force glove change but did not succeed and Ali got only 6 secons more and than finished of Cooper, and then british fans started building this myth up and gave Cooper legendary status just because of that knockdown!!!
I think you are being overly harsh on Johnson. Ketchel is AN ATG and he was not the only person to not fight the fighters mentioned. Besides the public wanted to see him fight (and lose) to a white fighter. I do agree that he should have fought everyone you mentioned (especially Langford) . . . no doubt
Jasper he fought those men before he was champion. btw he did not fight John Lester Johnson. The Langford he fought was a novice of 155 lbs. Certainly you cannot us that as proof of JOhnson's superiority. He did not fight Langford when he matured into a 185-188lb heavyweight with power. Ketchel was an ATG middleweight. Joe Calzaghe was an ATG middleweight but he could not have - and should not have - knocked down Vitali or Wlad Klit. If he did that would be seen as a collosal embarassment.
Jasper he did get away with murderous holding and everything else I said was true... how does that constitute being bitter?
Langford was a great fighter and very underrated. He was the greatest fighter of the Johnson era IMO.
