In light of the fact a 169 lbs Conn gave a weight drained Louis fits ,before getting cocky, does the "Old Mongoose "have a shot against the "Brown Bomber?"
Conn was a faster and superior boxer than Moore, him giving Louis problems is a bad comparison. The Old Mongoose was very crafty and experienced at his peak, and of course is the all-time knockout king. However, he could not move like Conn and was far less elusive. Moore would almost certainly deck Louis in the fight, maybe more than once, but he would be easier to hit than Conn, and Louis would eventually, likely inside of 10 rounds, catch the Mongoose with a blistering combination and stop him. I'd take Louis 9 times out of 10.
Louis would be absolutely furious after visiting the canvas around round 3. But he'd keep to his boxing and knock Moore out around 10.
If Louis caught Moore, he could follow up and end it at any time. Moore commented that he never felt he would have been able to take Louis, and he would have respected Louis' immensely. If Archie is totally on his game, and able to smother Joe's shots for the most part, he would go the distance in a losing effort. (BTW, I see Moore as being a wonderfully elusive fighter with his upperbody movement guys...Louis would have trouble timing him) Not an easy fight for Joe though. Addendum: I don't think Archie would get a rematch.
Moore stated he respected Louis too much to fight him,he probably had his doubts he could take even an aging Bomber too,I dont think Moore would be elusive enough to get by Louis,he would possibly have some early success ,maybe even drop the "Bomber",prime for prime I take Louis by mid rds to late ko.
I agree that Louis likely wins, but my question is, could this fight have been made? Asside from Schemling, Moore could have been the hardest skilled puncher Louis faced up to the early to mid 1940's.
Louis will win the fight, but would be very interesting while it lasted, and Moore may very well drop the Louis, but the harder Louis bombs would tell after the mid-point imo
Louis by mid to late round kayo, depending on the time they fought, the later, the better for Archie and his chances of surviving.
Fighting a gangly Conn reflected poorly on the Bomber so he strived to come in at the lowest possible weight to 'even it out' a little, make it look better for the public.
A prime Louis doesn't get dropped. It's within the realm of possibility, but I wouldn't bet on it personally.
Moore has the power to drop Louis imo. Now Louis wont stay down, it could happen, Louis has been drop vs lesser foes. I still belive Louis would win in a land slide, perhaps has a easier time finishing Moore, than Rocky Marciano did, because of how pin point Louis was with his punchings. I dont think he miss as much as Rocky did.
Moore could, and would, catch Louis with good right hands as long as the fight lasts. He may even get a chance to drop Louis. I don't think Moore is fast enough afoot to keep Louis away, and is overwhelmed by Louis' offense. Louis ko5
