Jimmy Young did quite well and he wasn't a tremendous clincher. Besides, I wouldn't say that Foreman had clearly more power than Louis.
>Shuffling plodding Joe Louis "faster feet than Foreman" even though Ali, known for having fast feet, gave up trying to run from foreman in the 1st round. Ok.
He had, watch Baer fights. Foreman was great at cutting off the ring, but he's not faster on his feet. Louis wouldn't run from Foreman, but his faster feet would make him fight in and out game with countering George time and time again.
You're using the plodding wild slugger max Baer fight as evidence of Louis' having fast feet. A Baer who had an injured right hand. And then you try to act like Louis was a heavyweight version of manny pacquiao blitzing his opponents with flurries constantly getting in and out. I have eyes. I'm not even saying Louis definitely loses, but I completely disagree that if he won it would be in this elusive pot shotting sort of fashion. I just skimmed through the fight to see if maybe I missed something and no, he stood RIGHT IN FRONT of Baer for several rounds. He was completely flat footed with both heels on the ground and his hands low with his awkward pawing old school stance. He also got hit quite a bit, but Baer was simply outclassed in skill, timing, and hand speed to really capitalize on it and had a really poor attempt at a cross armed block to defend himself that had many holes. -show me a fight where Louis was light on his feet darting "in and out" unloading quick crisp combos then retreating. I want actual footage. -show me a fight where anyone managed to actually do this to a prime version of Foreman. Morrison and Holyfield do not count.
I slightly favour Foreman to win early. Louis is #2 on my all time heavyweight list; i am a big fan. However, Louis could get knocked down early. Its one thing to recover if you are knocked down by a Galento but a completely different thing when you are knocked down by Foreman. I do not believe Louis could use his feet to evade Foreman. However, if Louis threw fast and powerful right hands at Foreman, he may be able to earn Foreman's respect and keep him at a distance. Let's put it this way, if Louis has never seen any footage of a rampaging Foreman, he may not have any idea and could be completely overwhelmed. Louis was a planner and was better in rematches than in initial fights vs tricky opponents (Godoy, Walcott, Schmeling) However, if Louis has carefully studied Foreman's style AND if its the 1942 version (by then Louis was around 207 lbs and quite physically strong), i can see Louis winning. I think Louis's lightning fast combinations will be enough to earn Foreman's respect and keep him at distance. Louis would need to avoid the biggest punches Foreman could throw and wear him down. Ali managed to back Foreman up in round 3 of their fight before Foreman was exhausted. Louis is a way bigger puncher than Ali and also has the same handspeed. My gut feeling states that Foreman will land early and Louis will struggle to recover. However, a properly prepared Louis who has carefully studied Foreman may be able to use those lighting hands and dynamite power to stun Foreman, keep him at a distance, One thing is for sure. Louis isn't keeping him at a distance with his feet. He will need those quick 5-6 punch combinations to stun Foreman and make him think twice about coming forward. That is the only way to keep Foreman way. I favour Foreman 55/45 but i wouldn't bet any money on it.
I am genuinely bemused that many people are favoring Foreman here. Louis has a huge stylistic advantage, and Foreman probably only has a modest advantage in durability.
I only slightly favour Foreman because Louis could be hurt early. And Foreman is an finisher from another planet. Once he has you hurt, he will not relent. If Louis can keep Foreman at bay with those quick and heavy hands, and survive the first 5 rounds, he wins. If Louis's chin was as good as Holyfield's (or Ali's for that matter), i would favour him. Its just a gut feeling of mine that Foreman catches him early.
This is my kind of autism! I think Louis would put on a counter punching bonanza as Foreman would leave many opportunities for counter punching. Joe Louis excelled against Foreman type fighters.
