:yep :yep :yep ....if you stayed still Louis' killed ya. Too accurate, fast and powerful with his hands
=janitor] As Holmes detractors often tend to do. Iam simply returning the favor. The bolded statement basically says all. These fighters who were ranked above the better black men of the era, were rated above them for a very obvious reason. The records of men such as Lem Franklin and Elmer do not necessarily suggest this. Franklin was well deserving of a title shot in 1941 - the period in which the U.S. was at war with Europe. Elmer Ray would soon emerge after. Speculative terms such as " would have ", do not convince me of a potential reality... Lem Frankiln convincingly beat Abe Simon twice. Abe got two title shots against Louis, while Franklin never recieved one.............That's reality............
magoo i totally agree with you on lem franklin, excellent defense points. his 19-0(17) run against oustanding opposition is one of the best runs any contender in history went on, he unquestionably deserved a shot. i am still trying to figure out what caused franklin to all of a suddenly go so downhill, i suspect it was a permanant eye injury.
I think his speed and chin would be able to get him through the moments where he had to stand and trade. I don't think he'd win the exchanges, but he'd earn Louis's respect.
The Bey - Page match was actually for a shot at Coetzee. Bey pulled out over political reasons and Page got the shot.
Bey originally was taking the fight but his then girlfriend Natalie Cole got on his case ,and explained the apartheid issues, and Bey pulled out, taking a principled stand that cost him dearly.
Thanks for the support. I'm not very well schooled on the whole black contender scene of the 30's and 40's, but from what I've read, heard, and scene on paper, it certainly seems to me that there were a lot of good fighters that for whatever reason, never got title shots back in those days. Elmer Ray's record was particularly impressive in my opinion. From 1941-1947, he was something like 65-1, and even beat Joe Walcott at one point. I really don't understand why this man never recieved a title shot, except for perhaps the politics that surrounded his being black.
Bey vs Coetzee........Hmmmmmm......... Old people ****ing sounds rather appealing right about now.. This content is protected
And Holmes and Coetzee were going to fight in 1984 but it didn't work out obviously. So let's say Holmes and Coetzee really did fight on June 8, 1984 as was planned, and Holmes wins. If you're Holmes's manager, who do you get him fights with?
Thomas beat Witherspoon just after. I would have had Holmes go thru with the Crusher fight, then had he and Thomas meet for the whole kit and caboodle. That would be 47-0. He could have fought his Bey, Williams and Spinks then chasing the 50-0. After beating Thomas at that stage of his career i don't think too many would have screamed about them.
OKay John and Bill, I was trying to show you a real nasty and unappetizing picture, but since the good lord has blocked me from doing it, I'll spare you both and offer you this... This content is protected
And of course, this... This content is protected I was particularly careful to tone things down a bit, with consideration to Bill's age...
