Elmer Ray had a good streak after he was KO'd in 1 RD by Turkey Thompson in 1943 but most of his win streak was against fighters with losing records and it was not until 1946 that he had a notable win over Lee Savold then SD win Jersey Joe Walcott over Joe Walcott, However Joe returned the favor in 1947 and won the title shot against Louis...Turkey Thonpson who Ko'd Ray in 1943 was beaten 2 times by Bob Pastor ....As far as Abe Simon he lost to Franklin but had a good rematch reversal win over Eddie Blunt and a stop over Joe Walcott and had a good win streak losing one controversial and disputed decision to Jim Thompson, he was also a Jewish heavyweight and a draw, Lem Franklin had a good 1940 and 1941 but unfortunatly was KO'd by Bob Pastor in FEb of 1942......We all know Bob Pastor got a shot at title in 1939 and had a good run after but being stopped by Billy Conn...Joe Louis defened his title Jan, Feb,March,April,May,June,Sept in 1941 so he was entitled to one or 2 softer defenses having 7 for the year...IMagine a heavyweight today fighting a defence every month for 6 months
I think it's a stupid decision actually. Just like sportsmen boycotting the Chinese Olympics. In sports at high level like this, you only get 1 shot, and if you blow that by disagreeing with their politics.... well good for you, but no one is gonna give one flying **** if a David Bey doesn't show up and you'll be regretting "what if" for the rest of your life. :good Of course, if you're an already established, powerful figure with options, like Ali or Holmes, then it's a different thing. Not to mention you should never listen to your girlfriend, especially if it's about politics.
Well, i agree with the Chinese Olympics but i disagree with the Bey decision. I don´t think we can measure the Chinese with our standards because they are a totally different culture with their own standards and it would be very arrogant and wrong to assume that ours are right and their are wrong. But with South Africa it´s a different matter. They belong to our Western Civilization and so we can judge them after our standards. That´s obviously right. :yep
I agree that China is a completely different world compared to western standards. I had a Chinese girlfriend (and by that i mean one that grew up there and came here to study when she was 19 or so), and there is a world of difference. She had no idea how to swim, said they have too many people to teach that to in schools. She also had no idea what a man's package looked like when she was as old as 18...i will not get into details but let's say they hadn't invented the razor blade yet either. I think things are a bit more sophisticated right now, but still. Africa is a different story, but i don't think you can hold them to western standards, either. If hunger is a problem in your country..... well i don't want to sound arrogant, but then the civilization is on a whole different level of development. I'm all for equality and all that, but fact is that a tremendous amount of money is being pumped into Africa and most of it goes to corrupt leaders or ethnic/religion/tribal based civil wars. They live by rules we had hunderds of years ago, you can't just "insert" modern technology and think they adopt it. I actually think China is less hopeless than Africa (which i think always will be poor and messed up).
!st of all I dont need anyone to tell me about something that I saw and lived. I was not in diapers like you may have been but was a fan of the sport and was bothered by the fact that Holmes and Coetzee,Weaver,Tate,Dokes,Thomas,Page did not happen, make any excuse you may and there may have been a good reason Holmes and Coetzee did not happen but did it have to be repeated with the rest of the guys and Witherspoon and Williams to boot. I was a fan of Holmes but felt he should have fought the better fighters of his generation like Louis and Marciano did. There was ample time and Big money fighting anyone of those men and there were all better qualified than Shavers or Cooney
I agree. They seem to be a good two-three hundred years behind places like the United States, Austrailia, and Europe.
Wasn't Cooney the #1 guy in the WBA and WBC at the time they fought? Because if he was, I can't think of anyone more qualified.
