Joe Louis v Robert Fitzsimmons

There is a famous quote that may be apocryphal.
After the fight an enraged Corbett says to Fitz "you've got to fight me again",Fitz is said to have replied ,"not likely ,you gave me a bloody good licking"!

 

Didn't Corbett try to attack Fitzsimmons after the fight though? Not a surprise that he wouldn't give a rematch after such a classless act.

 

Corbett and Fitzsimmons definitely hated eachother and there was genuine animosity. Fitzsimmons also made it clear that he would never give Corbett a shot at the title.

Corbett basicaly came out of retirment after Jeffries won the title and said that he had no problem in principal with defending against Corbett.

Corbett and Fitzsimmons do seem to have patched over their differences in latter years with Fitzsimmons visiting Corbett to congratulate him after he beat Kid McCoy.

I'd lean towards Louis, slightly.

Fitzsimmons is still underrated as a heavyweight though.

 

I think Louis destroys Fitz in 1 or 2 rounds. I have watched any and everything that I could get my hands on from all heavyweights eras and I don't see Fitz being able to hand here from what I have seen of both fighters.

 

I see Louis winning it but I've always liked this matchup, I think Rudy Robert has all the tools to give Louis a very tough night.
