Is was the Walcott one that I was thinking of specifically. Godoy and Walcott - Where the gifts But lest not forget he was defeated by Ezzzerd Charles, and Billy Conn ( a light heavy) had him beat. Max Baer was a one armed fighter ( broke hand) Schmeling stopped him, Braddock and another club fighter in Galento both decked him. Marciano destroyed him. He was not as dominant a force as many bellieve.
Lots of mauling from Godoy early, pushing Louis back. Louis working somewhat respectably off the ropes and looking for the uppercut. He isn't putting enough oomph into his jab. Louis definitely wasn't stronger here and Godoy used that to take away his space. I don't like scoring incomplete round, or fights, so I didn't. But as a whole of what I saw, I felt Louis looked the more impressive but Godoy imposed his style well. As I recall, the rematch is one of Louis' most impressive displays.
The posting wasn't about his past his prime losses to Charles and Marciano or behind on the cards ko win over Conn, his before hitting his peak loss to Schmeling or being dropped by Braddock and Galento who was a top ten heavy not a club fighter and he badly ko'd both of them, it was about gift decisions. Walcott for sure, Godoy is debated just like Ali-Norton 3.
Right, & you can make ANY fighter look bad if you insist on focusing only on his few losses or when you cherry-pick moments where a fighter was dropped or behind-instead of how they clearly turned it around & won, & almost always by KO. Joseph Louis Barrow was 66-3 with 52 KOs. 50-4 with 43 KOs & various titles as an amateur. He was the World Heavyweight champion for nearly 12 years with a record 25 title defenses. Unmatched in...Rematches. That does not include the war years when he had numerous exhibitions & nobody would have been a threat to his title. He likely only had the first Walcott fight as a gift decision. Is Ali way over-rated when, past peak, he seems to have received multiple gift decisions? Who like other HWs & many fighters, but unlike Louis, in some fights used significant cheating. The only actual or deserve loss before he was well past his peak was to Schmelling, which he avenged. The only way Louis can possibly be overrated-& he is normally either rated #1 or 2 all time as a HW... Is if you believe due to size & PEDs he would be overmatched head to head against some great modern SHWs. But he did very well against the biggest guys he fought. Louis was completely brilliant overall.
