What I never realized in this fight, and I think a lot of others didn't either, was that Louis entered this bout after only having one fight in a near 5 year period. Louis defended his title against Abe Simon in March of 1942, and then went to perform military service for some time. His next fight wasn't until 1944 when he met a journeyman named Johnny Davis. He would then fight Billy Conn in November of 1946. Do the math and thats only one fight with Johnny Davis in 4 years and 8 months!!!. After further evaluation, I can't hold Louis's performance in this bout against him. He was clearly rusty, explaining why Conn was able to box well against him for a number of rounds before being beaten. A more active Louis likely would not have a problem with the Connster. *****Sorry Folks, this thread needs editing due to my misreading some information.********
