Joe Louis vs Butterbean

Butterbean turned pro in 1994. Jack Sharkey and Jersey Joe Walcott died that same year. Coincidence? Or were they just trying to come up with an excuse to duck Butterbean??? Makes you wonder....

 

Butterbean was outboxed by a 52 year old Larry Holmes. Like the Holmes that beat Norton, except 23 years older. A 25 year old Joe Louis would kill Butterbean dead.

 

Louis certainly and absolutely did not have Holmes boxing intuition from keeping guys off him,i fact both are absolute polar opposites with how they approached guys,one slowly closed the distance and one didn't let you get near him.

Butterbean was not the same guy when he fought Holmes as there is such thing as to much weight in boxing,by then he had slowed and was really not cut out for any big time fight after the 90's. Holmes at 52 would still be hit far less then Louis would have just on the long jab.

could Louis have destroyed Bean? Of course but no fight actually shows this based on his own fights with similar guys as no one was 300 plus pounds with fast punches, crtainly no sub 200 pounder who would need to really drill Bean hard and fast from the get go.

 

Yeah, but 52 year old Holmes was a modern fighter, so he'd beat the dinosaur Holmes who fought Norton.

 

Who does more than Ali?
They've had 60 years to replicate and/or top his style.

If I can't picture their fight footage having an electric guitar playing in the background, they ain't beating Butterbean. And that's that.

 

Taking this forum offering seriously, what about Galento vs. the Better Bean? Does anyone want to start that thread? Or has it already been offered?

 

Butterbean was light years ahead of Galento.
And Galento knocked down Louis and shook him up badly with some punches.

The best I've heard it put is Galento was in terrible shape for an athlete, butterbean was just in outright terrible shape. Galento actually had serious potential (Jack Dempsey thought so), but was lazy, and didn't train properly.

I kinda admire Butterbean for carving out a niche doing what he loved, but he really was a circus show, getting beaten by a 50 year old Holmes, and KOed by a guy with a loosing record, Galento actually fought with top contenders.

No matter how much evolution you think there was, there's no way you can argue Mitchell Rose was better than Nova or the Baers.

Butterbean scored a brutal KO of the modernly trained and conditioned Johnny Knoxville.

OK Knoxville hasn't got the boxing background of Louis but there is colour film of him hence he must be considered as least a big a threat as Nova, Farr, Baer and Schmeling were.
