Lets look at Tommy Farrs record against champions- Tommy Loughran 1-0 Max Baer 1-1 Joe Louis 0-1 (waffer thin win for Louis) Jimmy Braddock 0-1 (controvertial) Did any of them actualy produce a convincing win over him? I am in no doubt that Farr was the best British heavyweight between Bob Fitzsimmons and Lennox Lewis. If Fitz and Lewis are teir A, and Farr is teir B, then everybody else is teir C.
I think Byrd is better than Farr. Both guys had good chins. The main differnce is, Byrd is much slicker, harder to hit and faster. Farr stood toe to toe with Louis! Byrd's southpaw stance adds another riddle for Louis to solve, and if you ask me Louis was not swift to adapt and change tactics in the ring. I still think Louis wins a decsion.
Louis would catch up to Byrd and finnish him around the 5th or 6th, Byrd is too stationary to cause too many problems and lying on the ropes and rolling shots is just going to get him ko'd here. Louis fast calculated and varied offense would be too much for Byrds defense
BIG DEE HERE= Louis in 6 rds as his hands are to fast and hit way to hard for Byrd to take. As for Byrd and Tommy Farr the ability for Farr to take a punch would be the difference in the outcome of the fight as Tommy was every bit as fast as Byrd if not faster. Tommy Farr would walk right through Byrds punches as he can`t break an egg with his punches. Farr has a chin of high, high quality and has been tested by several of the hardest punchers in heavyweight history. Joe Louis couldn`t deck him and twice with Max Baer. Baer dropped Farr in the second fight with a left hook to the jaw in the second rd. and a right hand to the temple in the third. Farr in this fight was a machine as his left jab was magnificent closing Baer`s eye. Farr allways said till the day he died that Max Baer hit far harder than Joe Louis, especially with the short arm shots in the clinches that felt like hammers instead of hands. Byrd just couldn`t handle Louis`s hand speed combined with his power as Byrd never fought anyone remotely like Joe Louis in his life. Byrd couldn`t take it like Farr could as Farr took it from two of the most brutal punchers in heavyweight history and finished the fights on his feet, something that Byrd can`t say after Ike and Wlad crushed him.
