Highest quality footage I have seen https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=k-5d_arIdoE Man walcott surely looks the winner. Look at the standing ovation he gets from the crowd as Louis leaves the ring. As for the conn fight..watch 20 min mark, how Louis calmly walks back to his corner. That's why he is the gretastest fighter of all time. Big mouth punks like Antonio tarver goes bananas when he knocks out roy jones, he looks ridiculous.
Wow pristine. Great find. Only watched the Conn bout so far. The knockout combo is so much more clear. He hurt Conn a half minute earlier with a short jolting right that Conn Jumped into. Great great fight. Conn hurt Joe at end of round 8 and seemed to sweep rounds 9-12 and was winning 13 until he got hurt.
Walcott vs Louis 1 ) A ringside poll of 32 boxing writers had 21 scoring the bout for Walcott, ten scoring it for Louis and one calling it a draw. The crowd booed the decision, and Louis himself tired to leave the ring early, a sign he knew it wasn't his night...but it was. Walcott vs Louis 2 ) Scoring. Two judges had Walcott up 6-3 and 5-4. The ref however somehow had Louis up 5 round to 2! What fight was he watching?! I find the ref's scoring in many of Joe Louis fights that he did not win via blow out to be way off Louis of course won the 2nd fight via KO when Walcott for whatever reason showboated a bit and got nailed. Prior to that it was mostly Walcott who floored Louis in round 3, and made him look real bad. PS: Danny at Sweet fights has a huge list, and fair prices. I would recommend him. He has some semi rare films
Jersey Joe's the man, just a delight to watch,,, it must have been a pure pleasure to have seen him live (Burt you there), and the whole era too for that matter. S-MWs cum L-HWs most of them if fighting today, with the bigger guys finishing as Crusiers into todays rings. Nice footage, though a decade or so later it is just as clear & as sharp as it is today, though still in Black & White.
Yes T, I am here. I only saw Jersey Joe Walcott ringside once and WAS he impressive when he kod the young senational ko artist from Tampa, Fl, Tommy Gomez at MSG. When Walcott was "ON" he would give most any heavyweight in modern times trouble... Walcott was 32 years old when I saw him ko Gomez and when he gave Marciano such trouble 5 years later JJW was an old 37 creaky oldster by then...
cheers Burt, I would love to have seen JJW, Ezzard Charles and Lloyd Marshall more than any other fighters. :good
