Galento beat some decent fighters. Not sure why he's maligned so much. He was a dangerous fighter and gave a prime Louis a good fight for a few rounds. He came to fight.

He shook Louis bad in round 1, and had him on the ropes. He landed some good shots throughout the fight, and landed some short punches in the clinches. He was active and aggressive.

 

Galento fought 3 times in 1 night in 1931, and drank beer in between rounds.

He ate 50 hot dogs for a bet the night he fought Arthur De Kuh, a decent big heavyweight, and knocked him out.

Galento received a cut when his brother threw a beer glass at him a couple of days before the Max Baer fight. Galento fought anyway, but he hadn't trained for that fight, his manager Joe Jacobs having died suddenly a few month earlier.

Galento had nearly died himself back in 1938, of double pneumonia. Apparently a priest was called while he was in hospital to administer last rites. He was back in the ring a few months later, and within a year later he was putting Louis on the floor.

Galento was a tough fighter.

I can't say for sure who beat the better fighters. Neither of them beat the best, but they both beat contenders of their day.

Galento had Louis shook in round 1, as well, I think. Had him wobbling and knock him back into the ropes.

I haven't seen it. I listened to the radio broadcast. The announcers thought he fought well.

McNeeley never beat a contender. McNeeley was flattened by every contender he faced. He was also flattened by bums.

 

It's possible Galento was up to some unhealthy prefight shenanigans.
