The Machen fight shouldn't be used as an idictment against Liston's punching power. After all, no one KO's every opponent all the time. But could a properly prepared Louis find the KO over Machen?
I truly admire the way Machen fought Liston...what carried him along to the 10 round limit was his attitude. He was utterly fearless and thought/fought outside the box, so to speak...oh, he fought smartly by boxing and moving, but he taunted Liston before, during and after the fight. Unheard of behavior...and 4 years before Cassius Clay. Machen sat times spun Liston into the ropes, stepped on his feet and would have done more if his reach equalled his grasp (or is it the other way around with that expression?) Machen, in other words, had balls the size of boulders and was modestly skilled enough to frustrate the bear, take his best shots and make it to the final bell. Having said all that, I don't know if it would have been enough to at least do the same vs Louis. I still haven't decided.
I think it's a possibility that Louis superior handspeed and accuracy might have saved the day for him.
I have always been wary of taking a great fighter's off night, and predicting that the opponent would do the same to other great fighters. This is effectively basing your predictions, on the fight that is the anomaly, from both men's point of view. Just because Arturo Godoy and Billy Conn gave Joe Louis difficult fights, is not a good reason to assume that they would do the same to Liston. I extend the same logic to the question of Louis vs Machen.
Eddie Machen was caught early by Ingemar Johannson by a big right hand and was floored 3x before being stopped in the first round. However after this fight he seem to show renewed determination just like he was determined not to go back to jail. Against Liston he showed quick hands and feet and Ali wisely adapted this same strategy against Liston. This version frustrated Liston as he resorted to low blows and was penalized 3x in signs of desperation. Joe Louis would find this same Eddie Machen a hand full and there would be no ko. Joe Louis on pts.
I think it probable that he would ,he had faster hands than Sonny. Either way Machen would not be winning this fight.
Louis had both the power and the accuracy in his Right Hand to ko machen. but i dont think he would. sure, Johansson did it...….and Louis certainly hit as hard as Ingo. the difference is that when machen fought Ingo, Ingo was lightly regarded and 3-1 Underdog. machen probably took him lightly and got caught. vs Louis, his attitude would have been completely different. cause NOBOBDY would take a prime Louis lightly. he´d be far more carefull and survive the Course imo.
