I have a Ring Magazine article that says team Louis was thinking about a match with Ray. Then his team saw Ray produce a KO in Madison Square Garden, and the idea quickly went away.
Lol. Chokelab counts “exhibitions” as if they were real pro fights on their records. What’s next counting who won the sparring session? It all ties back to Louis being “a great big man” in 1950 so he can credit his hero Marciano to be able to defeat modern giants
I guess you learn something new everyday, I had no idea the public felt that way about Charles being champ.
Don’t tell choke this! He wants to convince us all Louis was still great in 1950 so Charles and Marciano get full credit for beating a “great big man”
Yeah, RING was especially hard on him. They gave him a very hard time. They even gave some air to the alternative claim from Bruce Woodcock I think it was. Think of Holmes following Ali I guess.
Not necessarily mcgrain. A Louis Charles rematch was all but signed for September 1951..the venue everything was all planned out. The planned rematch got destroyed when Walcott upset Charles in a “tuneup” bout in Pittsburgh Louis did not immediately rematch Charles because he said he felt “rusty, overweight” and needed a bunch of real pro fights to sharpen up his skills before fighting charles again. After Louis knocked out Savold, he said “I’m ready”. Talks happened with Charles, but he blew it with the loss to Walcott in July
That's such a shame! Charles more than paid his dues in the ring way before he got a sniff at the heavyweight crown.
Louis wins all day for me. Much more proven track record. Learned how to handle the crouch style against Godoy. Plus they fought 3 exhibitions and Louis was the better man improving each time. Not trying to disparage Ray he was a good heavy but I don’t think he was good enough to beat Louis.
Meaningless exhibitions in 1949 The ray of 1947 off wins over Charles and Walcott in a real pro fight is a lot different than the 39 year old ray of 1949 who was medically disqualified from ever competing in a real pro fight
He was medically disqualified after the 3rd fight where he was coming off a loss. In the first bout - Louis edged him in a squeaker. In the second bout Louis won again more handily than the first time. Louis also climbed through the ropes at 220lbs. In a real fight Joe would of been in better shape , quite simply I believe Louis (even in 1947) to be the better fighter. I also think style wise Louis would have an answer for Rays crouch. So exhibitions aside I pick Louis by KO
The shame for Walcott was the scoring in the first Louis fight. Sorry, could not resist : ) Props to SuzieQ, who joined the board as a teenager. Now a grown man, he's much improved as a poster.
This is true. Louis was aging and his management was handpicking opponents a lot more carefully than when he was younger. Louis management also avoided a fight with lem franklin in 41. There is no film of Ray. Judging by his style and punching power, he had the firepower to hurt and floor Louis. Ray was a swarmer with speed who could seriously trouble Louis. I think ultimately Louis has the guile to rise up and make ray pay for trying to go toe to toe with the still dangerous Louis of 47. Louis figures him out and knocks ray out. Fight doesn’t last long. Ray didn’t have the best chin himself.
