yes! he was the 1972 aau champ and did ko holmes twice and in my opinion was one the greatest amateur heavys ever.he has an array of amateur titles.to answer your question about don king, the crazy haired man had a hand in making sure my fathers pro career was a flop.my father was a prospect going into the pros and came out of the pros as a mediocre fighter if that. ive painfully accepted this fact.not to stray off this subject matter, but i love to hear about his old times.but ive come to the conclusion that my father was used as a pro as a tune up fighter for some possible future contenders.he did get approached by lou duva in 72 to take dad under his wing but my father being young and naive went with a local moron winky groom who screwed him.i heard one time he tried to make dad a wrestler. its a sad story to be honest(his pro career).
Well, for one thing he probably had a bit more durabilty than Louis did,not by a long shot, but certainly to a noticeable degree. Louis was KO'd early in his career by a 190 pound fighter, and would later get floored by fighters who weren't quite the complete athletes that Evander proved his chin against. ( You'll disagree of course, but I guess that's what makes this forum interesting. ) Louis was later KO'd at age 37 in 8 rounds by Marciano, while Holyfield proved at the same age that he could still hang in there with a fighter like Lennox Lewis. Louis was the better combination puncher by far, but Holyfield had a masterful left hook, straight right, and could adapt during a fight, while Louis performed poorly if his initial fight plan failed him. Overall, Louis is the better fighter, but in a head to head sense, I'd have to go with Holyfield in this one. Some say Evander never fought the calibur of a Joe Louis, and while this may be true, the same could be said in reciprocity. How many fighters in the 40's had the musculature and conditioning of Evander Holyfield? How many guys did Louis fight who could hit like Tyson, Lewis, Mercer, Foreman, Bowe, Moorer, Stewart, Dokes, Cooper or Qawi? I don't always subscribe to the theory of the modern athlete always beats the old school athlete, but this comparison has more validity than most. I just don't see Louis as being able to put away Holyfield the way he did Baer, Braddock, Carnera, Schmeling and the rest of that list. If Louis was floored in one round by James Braddock who was returning from a two year layoff to give Louis final verification as the champ, then think of what a 28 year old Holyfield in 1990 who destroyed Douglas might have done to him had Louis attempted to take the title?
That's a shame. I heard your dad was a feared fighter with extremely heavy hands who would knock most people out in the first round in his amateur days. Don King screwing him over sounds about right, the man is very charming, brilliant yet evil and probably has a stone where his heart should be.
just curious but where did you hear about him? ive been on a mission trying to find old footage of him.and no im not trying to toot his horn anyone else who is reading this.ive talked to several people saying they watched him on fight abcs wide world of sports usa vs the world series.ive had no luck finding anything on him such as this.i guess his name isn t as big as i thought it was even with the power of the internet.weve got a couple of fights on film including one of the holmes fights ko 1.but i would love for anyone who had any info on how to obtain this would be greatly appreciated.
There are two guys who post on here who you should try, My Dinner With Conteh and Raging B()LL. These guys may be able to point you in the right direction at the very least. You are dead wrong in you Louis-Hollyfield prediction by the way. Good luck finding footage of your pa.
how can i be dead wrong? this all opinion based, this is a fight that never will happen,i value your fight opinions as much as anyone elses.but i think holyfield had it all.joe louis was a awesome in his time but i just dont feel he matches up to evander.
What top drawer offensive fighter has Evander KO'd in three rounds? He is outgunned in terms of handspeed, power, comination punching and this looks like a bad match up for him stylistically (though not desperatley so). The idea that Hollyfield could solve this problem so quickly is pretty radical. To do it, Hollyfield would need to go to his greatest strengths, gutting it out and finding a way.
What dose Holyfield have that Louis dosn't? You say Louis was awsome in his own time. What developments have there been since his time that might have made him better?
