Alrighty so I was at the gym and was having this talk with a buddy of mine, he said Chuvalo would give him that Marciano treatment. But George isn't nearly as strong as Marciano (I'd like to think so) and this is a prime for prime match-up we're talking about But let's discuss will Joe's technical break down win or will George overpower Louis :bbb
Chuvalo was not as good as Rocky. He was good, but tended to lose to all the best guys. Je was a plodder like Louis, almost impossible to KO, threw hard 7 good volume, but not at an ATG level. It would go like the 1st Ali Chuvalo fight, a lopsided decision. Chuvalo could not overcome the very quick & accurate combinations.
Chuvalo was stopped by the two best punchers he fought, the same will happen here. His chin was very good, but part of the reason he was so hard to stop was the fact that he was quite cautious and always kept his chin tucked in. He usually moved forward and alot of people look at him as a face first brawler, but he rarely took any risks. He had a good defense and when he was hurt he was very good at masking it. There is a moment in the second Ali fight when he gets caught with a blow and just stops, Ali not aware that he has him hurt goes to ropes and waves to George to follow him but George refuses, instead Ali goes on the offensive and punishes him on the ropes until the bell rings. Like any figher George could be hurt and stopped, and Louis will do it. Probaly early since he wont have to look for George.
One thing to start with Joe was not 'a plodder' as alluded to earlier he was effienciency personified not a plodder -as a prime fighter Joes feet were pretty nifty actually! Check out hus feet against Max Baer and also against Jack Sharkey!? CHUVALO on the other hand was a plodder absolutely personnified! He made Frazier look fairly nimble which is saying something! Louis' footwork got him in the right position at all times and this would be key - Joe would be far too precise for Chuvalo - against Foreman and Frazier Chuvalo could ride with the shots for a time because they were more telrgraphed and slower coming at him and against Patterson and Ali they were more quick pinpoint accurate but without the crushing power so againhe could afford absorb a little more while he chugged forward but against Joe Louis he have to deal with trigger fists and freaky power and you cant just accept that youre gunna have to take your lumps with Louis - if he does that the referee wont allow Him to continue to take the variety of punches Louis would be hitting him with - there would be instant effect aswell whereas maybe with Foreman who wasnt the most accurate or poised fighter it would take a few rounds to really get his shot on and even still theyd be the kind of winging shots - Louis' were crisper and more explosive
This is almost not even fair to Chuvalo. Louis, with his pinpoint precision combos and dynamite power in both hands would absolutely thrash Chuvalo. No doubt in my mind it would be a stoppage the only question is does Chuvalo go down, get saved, stopped on cuts, stopped due to grotesquely swollen features, etc. Louis would look unstoppable against Chuvalo, perfect opponent for him.
Great ****ysis. Ref stops the slaughter after about 8 rounds. Agree too about anyone not dancing around the ring like Ali or '98 vintage Mayweather being labelled a ''plodder'' by some fans.
As much as I like George Chuvalo, he'd eat up too much punishment for his own good. Louis's precision punching and quick combinations would make it a painful night resulting in a stoppage somewhere.. Not a good match up.
This would be an ugly one-sided fight a precision puncher with a face busting jab against a durable brawler. Chuvalo gets carved up like a side of beef and stopped in 7 rounds.
If you were talking primes then no such thing as the "Marciano treatment" exists - or do you and your friend believe that Marciano vs. Louis would have played out exactly the same as it did, in a prime for prime contest? :think
Red were you around for that guy that insisted that Chuvalo beat Ali in the first title match. I forgot his damn name. He even posted a round by round but quit halfway through. Just one of the more inexplicable calls I've seen.
Yeah, I remember him....by some Bizarro World type of logic, he had George being the first man to beat Ali....but really, that poster took such of a beating himself, that I don't think he's been back since.
Fair enough about Louis footwork, & we all agre on the results. But Louis has been described a a plodder due to his footspeed. This is one fair definition of the word.
Louis was anything but a plodder vs Baer...he damned sure looked like the perfect heavyweight....Not a Willie Pep or Ali ....but perfect.
