London prize ring rules, who does it benefit? Initially I'd say dempsey, but Louis is textbook so the gloves wouldn't hinder his style that much. Dempsey fight break a hand.

    Louis KO 14

Absolutely no doubt Dempsey takes this. He did fight, all the time bareknuckle, Joe was might have been a great boxer/fighter. But, Dempsey is a road warrior.

Dempsey had a great many fights never recorded in back alleys, and bars all across the USA.

He did, and by his own admission he lost some of them.
This match up falls into the "who knows?" column like almost all of them do.

It would seem that Dempsey, with more experience in bare knuckle brawling, would have a decided advantage here.

Louis by early knockout. Dempsey was hit a lot in his career by good boxers, especially by right hands. Dempsey was also stunned several times on film(Sharkey, Carpentier, Tunney, Firpo). His defense gets overrated here.

A knockout isn't even possible under London Prize Ring Rules.

If Dempsey was dropped, he would have 30-38 seconds (depending on the jurisdiction) to come up to scratch.

If he failed to do so, the result would be a win for Louis, not a knockout.

Durability is the most crucial aspect here. I'd submit that Louis has the more proven durability.

    Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

Dempsey had the better chin, but that might not be important.

They bot seemed to do pretty well over fifteen rounds.

It is basically going to turn, on who adapts to the totally alien rule set better.

I don't know if he did have a better chin. Certainly he never proved it on film. The beatings I've seen Louis absorb from ATG punchers are absurd. Dempsey, I think, would have been taken out by the light-hitting Tunney over 15.

But yeah, who knows basically, it's a mad question.

I think possibly he was harder to hit in literal terms, yeah, but he also didn't get near an offence of Rocky Marciano's quality, and probably not Schmeling's...so, unknown. I know some people go a bit overboard with it now, but for an all time great champion, he is a little on the unproven side.

Put him in with Louis's comp and i'd expect to see him take some kickings, to be frank.

You are probably the first Dempsey kicker, who said this sort of thing, and was sincere!

Ok well I see Dempsey staying down doe more than 38 seconds

So Louis gets the W. Dempsey is made for Joe Louis. Dempsey gets outclassed. Dempseys defense on the inside was below average, and he didn't smart when he got hurt. He was very susceptible to a good right hand and was staggered several times on the film we have by carpemitier firpo Tunney Sharkey Brennan

I don't see what's the big idea of Dempsey Doubters saying they don't rate him highly because he didn't beat the TWO best heavyweights of his era.

I mean can you imagine the criticism other great heavyweight champions would receive on this forum if they didn't beat there two best contenders?

Dempseys skills on film show him beating up Greb leftovers or big lumbering unskilled fighters . The two talented guys he did face...he lost 24 out of the 27 rounds against Sharkey and Tunney
