I think this has to be the most interesting "dream" matchup...

Who do you think wins this match? :!:

My three favourite "dream matchups" at HW would be Louis-Tyson, Hollyfield-Liston, Louis-Ali.

Anyway, Louis wins this one ny moider. Early KO.

I cant think of a more explosive match-up than this.

This fight would not go past 4 rounds, IMO.

Either man could win it. Both men were phenomenal.

Dempsey had the power to hurt Louis, but I'm not sure that I see it happening. I think inevidably these two meet at close range, and Louis's inside technical work takes over.

    Extraordinary showdown!

Both come out aggressively and hurt each other to a near stoppage.

Yet, both have the toughness to survive into the middle rounds of a fight that becomes an exciting attrition war.

Louis finally collapses to a Dempsey barrage around the 13th.

Actually I think Dempsey is superior inside, with his short hooks. You can make a case either way I feel,I just think Dempsey roars out and overwhelms Louis .

    Sombody early.

I have a leaning to Louis due to the stylistic detail. Anything could hapen though once the big artilery is mutualy engaged.

I tend to agree here. I don't see Louis reacting well if he gets stunned.

Dempsey by 15 round UD. I believe that each would have stood up to whatever firepower the other carried. Dempsey had a slight handspeed advantage, but this could be offset by the shortness of Louis's punches.

But Dempsey had a major advantage in some key areas. His mobility and footspeed was superior to Joe's, and Louis did not like being crowded, by his own admission. Jack would have given him far more upper body bobbing, rolling and weaving than Godoy did. (Dempsey actually developed a strong stomach through the amount of bobbing and weaving he practiced through the conditioning process.)

If this came down to a simple matter of punching technique, Joe's only weakness was the one which Jack Johnson observed, and Max Schmeling exploited. But Dempsey would stay low so that Louis's punches went over him (which Galento failed to do), and his lateral movement for obtaining the proper punching angle would allow him to outmanuever Joe.

Any flash knockdowns scored would be by Dempsey, who had slightly superior balance at his best.

This is always a good thread topic, and the next time one is created, I may well discuss the case for Louis. It's not difficult to imagine how either one would prevail. I do believe such a pairing would go the distance either way, considering how tough each was at their best.

Based on what? 80% of the time Louis was floored, he got right up to win.
The only exceptions were when he was 37 years old against one of the best punchers of all time and once when he was rather young and overconfident, and even then it took 8 rounds after the first knockdown until he was finished.

Of course, Dempsey had great recovering abilities as well.
