Dempsey by KO like mcvey said! Dempsey hit harder than Louis!Jack Sharkey said that even old and past prime Dempsey he fought hit harder than Louis!Dempsey from 1919 is much better than that old Dempsey! Also Buddy Baer,Galento,Conn and Godoy are not fast, strong and skillful as Dempsey and still they knocked Louis!Louis had problem with swarmers!Godoy,Galento...and Marciano!Swarmers crowd him which Louis didn't like! Also Dempsey is faster than Louis and his headmovement and offense is far superior! Dempsey by KO in mid rounds!
Joe Louis KO. Dempsey is more skilled than pergaps given credit for (definitely not just a swarmer with power) but he is in optimum range for Louis and that's his undoing. He could well be ahead when the sudden ending comes.
60-40 Louis for me. Both men might hit the deck in this. Dempsey could get him early, but prime Joe was the better educated deadlier puncher and operator overall. Jack might well beat the younger Louis who lost to Schmeling. That taught Joe a lot.
Pretty disengenous. Dempsey avoided his number 1 contender in Wills and 1 of the greatest ever in Langford. Both deserved title shots Up until 1940 Larry Gains and Roscoe Toles were the only black contenders ranked in the Ring top 10. And it was at the bottom of the list. Did they deserve title shots? Perhaps, I would have liked to have seen it. But the public unfortunately wanted a great white hope and that's what they got time and again. Plus they were the highest ranked opposition. From 42-46 Louis doesn't fight due to the war. After the war he comes back and faces the best black contender available.
Louis KO inside 5. Dempsey forces him into action pronto with his early ferocity and the war is on. Louis might get hurt early or even suffer a flash KD but he'd be back with a vengeance.
Bigger? Dempsey weighed 192 pounds against firpo for example. And prime louis weighed what? 197? 200? So the size argument is ridiculous. Stronger? I doubt it. Judging by their body types dempsey looks like the typical guy with huge strength in tendons
Depends, does Louis go in with a pre prepared game plan? If he does, and elects to jab less and throw more uppercuts he'll take this one fairly easily, if not and he just goes in like normal... Jack probably drops him and an ATG fire fight happens, where both go down. I think I'd pick Louis in that one too, but it's probably a 50/50.
Show me which wins by Langford during Dempsey's reign that entitled him to a title shot? He was 36 when Dempsey won the title, blind in one eye from being stopped by Fred Fulton who lasted under a minute and a half with Dempsey. Black challengers ranked during Louis reign include. 1940. Toles,Walker. 41.Franklin,Thompson,Toles 42.Bivins,Thompson,Tolesa,Bobo.Brown.Brooks. 43.Bivins,Murray,Sheppard,Thompson. 44.Sheppard,Murray,Ray,Hart. 45.Bivins,Ray,Walcott. 46.Ray,Walcott,Murray. 47.Walcott,Ray,Murray,Thompson. 58.Walcott,Charles,Bivins. These by the way are only the end of year rankings! BTW You might want to look up how many black fighters Louis faced before he won the title.
I did, that's your example of Louis being close to be stopped? He got dropped by first lucky punch and when he got up he took Mauriello out of this fight seconds later. He got dropped, he wasn't close to being stopped. I hope that's not how Dempsey would try to take out Louis. If he would drop Louis early and then came right at him like Tami, then the end would be comparable.
This is completely disengenous nonsense. Louis took 4 years out of boxing at the start of 1942. The 1942 rankings are from 1943 - ie irrelevent because Louis was taking part in the war effort. The 1942 rankings are also sort of irrelevant because he was stopping boxing at the date this list came to pass. As soon as he returns he rematches a close fight in Conn, Conn and Morello were 1 and 2, he beats them both and then faces the best black contender, Jersey Joe Walcott twice and then retires. BTW Louis faced Toles in an exhibition bout and was stopped in 6 rounds. It would have been a legal bout as well but a contract stipulation leading up to his shot with Carnera prevented him having a sanctioned bout.
Louis fought 3 defences in 40 Godoy x2 and Paychek. He could have fought Franklin who was ranked. In 41 Louis fought Conn who was not ranked at heavyweight.Franklin,Toles, and Thompson were. Louis defended twice during the time the US was in the war, both times against white challengers.
