Fine enough, I didn't remember it well. He got stunned, but not knocked down. Doesn't change the fact that Louis ended this fight in brutal fashion.

The 41 Ratings , or any other years ratings are the ratings for December of that year, that's why they are called the end of year ratings!
Or the fact that Mauriello was slow afoot because he had a bum leg.Louis said this was his last great fight , .where he felt like himself.Dempsey would not have let him of the hook, but if Louis survived the early rounds his chances would increase dramatically and after 5/6 his better overall skills would begin to pick Dempsey apart.
    IF!

You've just so happened to pick out Dempsey's heaviest weight in about a 5 year stretch. Who would have thought?

Prior to that in his peak years he hit 190 just once in about 8 fights. The common weight in his peak was around 185-188.

Louis was commonly a smidge over 200.

There's probably be about 12 pounds between them which isn't a lot no. It's safe to say both punch well above their weight in the big scheme of things.

After seeing much footage of both dempsey and louis .

I've come to be convinced dempsey would of finished off louis early. Louis was calculated with his knockouts and would go back at times when he needed too . he would look for the knockout technically and calculated after going even going through trouble . dempsey hardly went backwards always went forward and if you traded with him he would bring the dog out of himself. I just believe dempsey was more brutal overall and would not let louis off the hook . where in areas louis fought from a saftey first and would fight as if he was worried about getting caught at times.

I think dempsey had the better chin . better hand speed and more hungry to get the knockout also more vicious .

Joe Louis also didn't fight any Asian or Middle Eastern challengers!!! What's up with that???

I'm not criticizing Louis who would have fought King Kong,I'm highlighting the fact that his promoter, abetted by his managers largely steered him clear of black fighters and challengers for better financial returns against white ones.

Dempsey has a style edge here as Louis struggled vs. the swarming types in Godoy, and Marciano. You could throw Galento into the mix, and he got caught in that one before finishing him.

Dempsey was not a bum of the month type with cement feet, and Louis did his best work vs. the slower footed fighters. Dempsey had pretty quick feet. On the other had, he's less technical on defense and relies more on the movement that what I would call a classic defense guard. Loius had a low guard, mostly stationary or shuffling feet, and stick your face forward style. Neither man had good defense.

Size is close enough here; hand speed is close too. I'd give Dempsey an edge on durability, but not by much. Louis to had better energy in the later rounds. This is a good match up. Who wins?

I like Dempsey inside or five rounds or Louis later in the mid to later rounds. Dempsey was not a bum of the month type with cement feet, and Louis did his best work vs. the slower footed fighters. Dempsey had pretty quick feet. If that's too much of a fence-sitting reply, I'll go with Dempsey to win. Louis didn't recover quite as well when he was hit and often took too much time infight adjustments.

By beating the best South American Challenger, you could say he gets a pass here. The issue with Louis snd Dempsey is both used a color line. Dempsey didn't fight any black contenders for his title, and Louis fought just two African American men out of his 26 title defenses. One was near blind, the other likely beat him once. The color line sucked. Marciano was the man at heavyweight to break it by fighting the best ranked out there.

What's this? You are getting it now. Better late than never. Add in Elmer Ray. He was worth a title shot for sure, and Louis people after seeing Ray live didn't want it to happen.

Yes, I think Louis didn't recover as well as Dempsey did when he was tagged. What's wrong with saying that?

Schmeling landed a hard counter right, and Louis could not shake it off for the duration of the fight. Meanwhile Dempsey was floored/ knocked out of the ring by the likes of Fripo, who if anything could punch, and he climbed back into the ring and looked just fine. Dempsey was also pasted by Sharkey and recovered. And took a beating by Tunney and didn't show lingering effects, he just couldn't match Tunney's speed or skills.

I've seen stuff on film where Louis was hurt by Billy Conn, who was below 170 pounds and stunned by Tommy Farr's jab ( I think round 9 or 11 ). That type of stuff didn't have the same effect on Dempsey. Only my opinion based on film. This fantasy fight is not an easy one to call.

Schmelling landed that counter right all night long. It was a sustained beat down.

Louis was knocked down by Braddock and Buddy Baer and came back to win.

Louis fought 3 exhibitions against Elmer Ray, knocking him out and winning 2 decisions.
