you know, american football is a poor example, its not a heavily cardio reliant sport. its stop start stop start. Age ruins fitness fast, but it wont affect an NFL player until the injuries pile up.
Point taken, I can see the flaws in what I've posted. American football isn't an individual sport either, but it's also a sport that is heavily reliant on skill and technique, which can curve physical deficiencies much like boxing, but I guess in its excacerbated in a sport like American Football. That skill and technique can be used to counter fighters with superior physical tools by controlling distance and the pace of a fight. Like red says, there's so much more to consider than physical tools. Walcott might have been in better shape when he was 25, why wasn't he heavyweight champion then instead of 10 years later? it's not ridiculous for someone to be in better physical shape well into their 30s compared to when they were in their 20s. Federer for example, who I've followed ever since he was a teenager beating Sampras at Wimbledon, appears to be quicker, more agile and about as sharp as ever. Before the emergence of Wilder (who was clearly the best shape he's ever been against Ortiz at a ripe old age of 32) Joshua and Fury, the top 10 contenders at heavyweight were averaging an age of way over 30 and probably still are. I'm just to lazy to check. To be fair, I feel like I'm just rambling and ranting, apologies if these two post come across as non sensical to you Herol, it all seems to make sense in my head
Interesting. Eddie grew up with Joe Louis and even spared with him at the Brewster as amateurs. He still didn't let that cloud his judgment.
Johnson had by far more stamina.. At 37 or so could last more than 20 rounds no debate here. I think that if they fought 5 times joe would catch him 1 or 2 times and would win by ko but johnson wins by decision or late tko the most of times.he was too smart amd was a master of the defence and very strong in the clinch he knew when he had to use it perfectly and was so strong
The only thing I’m pretty sure of is 1910 rules Johnson wins 1938 rules Louis wins. Remember all the talk about Johnson ducking black fighters as champion but before he was champ he was the Colored Heavyweight champ and beat all the top black fighters. Joe Louis didn’t fight the top black fighters until after WW ll and what happened when he finally did he got beat by the first 2 he fought. Won a robbery against Walcott and got whipped by Charles. Yes he was older but those were probably the 2 best boxers he ever fought which probably had as much to do with the results as his age. I think Frazier Louis and Johnson are interesting matchups. Given some kind of compromise of era rules I like Frazier over Johnson but Louis (esp heavier version see Simon 2nd fight at 207) doing a Foreman against Frazier. However Johnson has the craftiness and quickness to win a decision and dont forget he was a stud in his prime very strong powerful guy so Louis wouldn’t have an advantage there either.
