IMO, Louis would have to win this one by stoppage as I don't think he'd decision Holmes. Louis has the goods to do it, but Holmes seems like he'd give Louis all kinds of fits. Who takes this and does it need a trilogy to settle it?

Yes. Holmes has the style to confound Louis. Jabbing, hooking off the jab, a solid straight right. Much in the same manner as the 1st Conn fight. The question in my mind is could Holmes avoid the inevitable Louis barrage and could he weather it? I'm really not sure about this one. My heart is with Louis, however, my head tells me Holmes walks away with a close UD or perhaps an SD which would set up a rematch.

I think Holmes outboxes Joe Louis for a good portion of the fight. He probably stings Joe and maybe sends him to the canvas at some point. Eventually I see Joe Louis coming back and timing Larry Holmes {who tended to fall asleep at times} and ending the fight with one of those classic right hand and God forbid the follow up.

Heavens, i was about to post similar. I think Holmes would lead early while he was fresh. Larry almost always ended up settling down and trading quite a bit and Louis would eventually time a right hand over the jab and he was brilliant enough to finish Holmes despite his great powers of recuperation and huge fighting heart. I'm thinking anywhere for the 5th to the 10th.

Holmes by UD. Louise never finds his rythem because of Holmes Jab. Holmes controls Louis for a UD

I can see both these guys winning.

On the one hand Holmes was bigger and technical and awkward with that great jab, he could make it a real hard fight for Louis. On the other hand if Snipes could deck Holmes then so could Louis who was a much better fighter. I think I edge towards Louis, but you could make the argument either way.

It's tough to vote against Louis but I think Holmes had all the tools to decision him. He could do what Billy Conn did but he wouldn't get as sloppy. But even if he did get caught, he had the ability to recover. I'd rate Louis ahead of him in any heavyweight top 10 but head to head I'd pick Holmes (and Ali) over Louis every time.

I'm in the minority with this one. But I see Holmes winning this fight. Unanimous dec, or late stoppage. Holmes jab would be the key. Holmes had all the tools to beat J.Louis , 1st a very good chin, great recuperative ability,a great jab (best in div history in my opinion) a very quick and sneaky underrated right hand, either throwing it straight, hook or uppercut . And above average foot speed in his prime. I see Holmes using his jab, forcing J.Louis to reset. Using his size and arm length to tie Louis up when ever the heat got hot, walk him back into the center of the ring start using the jab again.

Holmes is to big and skilled in one area. The easier to hit less mobile Louis wins by default.
