Both greats have styles and skill sets to offset the other....Joe is at times bothered by mobility...Larry is susceptible to right hand counters... 15 rounds for the heavyweight championship. Who and why?:think
I think Louis would win because he would catch up with holmes eventualy and then he would have the tools to finish him. While Holmes is mobile he is probably not mobile enough to keep away from Louis for 15 rounds. If Louis ever had Holmes in the trouble that Earnie shavers had him in then the bout would be over no question.
I'm not going to argue that one would beat the other, but I would like to ask you about your reasoning. You basically claim that Louis would catch up to Holmes and stop him. What's to say that Louis would finish him even if he did catch up to him? Afterall, Holmes survived many opponents who had him down, staggered, ahead on points, etc, as did Louis. Also, to use the Shavers analagy is not a very good comparison because Shavers was one of the hardest hitters of all time and had almost nothing in common with Louis stylistically. Once again, I'm not disagreeing with you, but would appreciate further explanation in your pick.
I think janitor is saying basically that chances are Louis's power, especially in his right hand, is bound to put larry holmes in trouble and since Louis is probably the best finisher in the heavyweight division, if he gets Holmes in trouble he will end it.
He may have a valid point. But did Louis ever face a fighter with as great of boxing ability or survival skills, or chin as Larry Holmes? I'm not doubting that Louis might beat him, but I also think that Holmes would bring more to the table than most fighters Louis fought.
IMO if Larry is on a good night, and fights smart, he could win a 15 round ud. He might even drop Joe with a properly timed right cross. This is by no means, an easy night for Larry. If he fights dumb and trys to exchange punches too much, then Joe fight get him by TKO. Both would come out busted up though.
Holmes wins by comprehensive dominance. Movers who used the jab gave Louis trouble. Holmes hit too hard from too far away and moved too much for Louis to give him a defeat. If Holmes was set on boxing and moving, he wins easy, either by late stoppage or decision. Prime for prime I'll say Holmes KO 10.
Louis is the best heavyweight finisher the division has seen bar none. When he had an oponent in trouble the crowd used to throw their hats in the air. Shavers might have been powerfull but he was a relativley one dimensional fighter. If Louis had you hurt you were screwed. In fact I cant think of a case where Louis had anybody in trouble and didnt finish the job.
Exactly how much range advantage dose Holmes have here? He has a few inches in reach but the diference in striking distance is negligible.
