I would say more than just decent. Watch him destroy Norton once he was hurt, with 5 power punches, all of which landed. He was a great finisher.

Fair observation but was he a finisher in the class of Louis, Tyson or even Liston?

I think Holmes had fasters hands than Conn, and unlike Conn he would have a good reach advantage on Louis. Louis liked to fight on the outside and set things up with his jab. This is Holmes match to lose. Its Schmleing vs Louis I re-dux.

Snipes was a solid puncher who caught Holmes with a bomb. Snipes in the 30's or 40's = a contender.

Of course, Snipes in any era would be a contender. And i agree that Holmes' footwork and style would give Louis fits. Holmes was no runner though, like Ali or in this case, Conn. And you have to admit: given Louis' great right hand he certainly has more than just a punchers chance!

And fighters who boxed and moved well troubled him as well- And we don't need Louis' input to know that one...

well its quite simply really. Holmes never faced a finisher with the combination punching, handspeed of a joe louis. renaldo snipes had holmes down and out, he was too novice he had no idea what to do with him once he got up. shavers didnt have anymore than 30 sec left in the round, and he was too one dimensional and predicatable anyway. Watching holmes get staggered hurt vs shavers, snipes, spoon, weaver.......if that had been a finish like louis in their holmes would have been done. for what its worth, old or not, the only finisher holmes faced remotley close to joe louis was mike tyson. tyson DID finish holmes off rather easily.

One other thing........Louis proved he could stop guys that were just as durable as larry holmes like James Braddock(never knocked out before), Tony Galento(never down before), Max Baer(never down before)

Only just below Liston, but a lot better than Shavers and much better than i think you'd say. IMO.

I think Holmes would have started off well against Joe, but suffered from that right hand later in the fight.

Larry's my favorite fighter, but I have to give it to Joe in 7.

Louis by clean knock out. If guys like snipes,Shavers, spoon or weaver could hurt Holmes then Louis would keep him down, styles makes fights and Louis liston and Tyson are horrible for Holmes

Good post. I'd also throw Foreman in there. Not sure about Tyson.

A prime Tyson was the worst nightmare ever for Holmes bro, Larry knows that he never would have been able to beat a prime Tyson at any stage of his career.
Yeah Foreman would be a hell too but Foreman was slower so Larry would have a chance to survive

So far all I've read is about Joe's rt hand and nothing about Holmes jab nothing at all. I have Joe Ali and Holmes as the 3 greatest HWC of all time. Instead of taking about Joe's rt hand I want to know how Joe deals with Larry's jab then the bullet that comes behind it.
Larry wins this fight anyway you look at it IMO. Remember were talking prime for prime also here.
