I think that Conn and Ramage were probably better pure technicians than Holmes. Granted they were obviously a lot smaller.
Several times is an exageration. As is the average fighters, he got rocked a few times by guys who were amongst the top 10 in the division. Louis was rocked and dropped far more than Holmes ever was, yet you seem fixated on the few times in his very long career that Holmes got rocked. Holmes was far more capable of landing clean, hard punches consistently than guys like the Baer brothers, Abe Simon, or Primo Carnera. Holmes wasn't a devastating puncher, but he was still a hard puncher. About as hard of a puncher as Evander Holyfield. Not devastating, but when he throws hard and lands clean, the oponent more times than not will be hurt. Take note of Holmes-Shavers I. Holmes showed just how quick, hard to hit clean, and all around just how good he really was at his best. He is a prime example of the kind of fighter that troubled Joe Louis. [yt]xpiy6gBQcfU[/yt]
wel.. i disagree... holyfield did hit harder than holmes for sure, holmes was not even a puncher, much less a hard puncher, earnie shavers said that ron lyle did hit by far harder than holmes, jerry quarry stopped shavers early and holmes landed and landed and he had a lot of work to stop shavers(glass chin)reinaldo snipes was a bum actually. joe louis has the stylistical advantage here, holmes would trade with him and toe to toe louis would win hands down by ko, the only chance of holmes is dancing , using the jab and moving during all the fight but holmes never fought like that, he was not like ali, soon of later larry would trade with louis and the inevitable end for holmes is the ko
Since a lightheavy with 20% KO ratio could bother Louis with his power I'm sure Holmes has enough power.
Holmes could definitely crack. He had a number of 1 punch KOs and 1 punch knockdowns. Only true iron chinned people (Cobb and McCall) were able to walk through all of his punches without showing any respect for his power. Jose Ribalta said that Holmes hit him with a jab that was as hard as anything that Tyson hit him with. Shavers said Holmes's jab felt like most people's straight right. Again, you don't only have 5 out of 20 of your title oponents make it to the final bell if you don't hit hard. Shavers did not have a glass jaw. He had poor stamina that often resulted in him gassing out and getting clobbered in the mid to late rounds, as Holmes, Lyle, and Cobb did to him. The Quarry fight was a bit of a fluke, similar to Hurricane Carter taking out Emile Griffith in one round.
Calling a fighter a glass jaw because of KO losses is only valid when that fighter has shown to be wobbly extremely quickly from punches (Acting like Khan) Shavers just got caught with big punches from time to time besides having bad stamina.
yes shavers was very tired in the round 1 against quarry and he was very tired also in the round 6 against lyle, in the round 5 against ron stander, obviously these ko loses were because his stamina, all in the later rounds
its fun to think old boxers are unbeatable. its a style matchup. fighters like holmes, lennox lewis and vitali K get **** for credit but would have beaten most heavyweights in history. long jab, good power, conditioning, defense. larry holmes is an all time great and would have beaten joe lewis by UD.
Holmes hurt Ribalta just as consistently as Tyson did, so it's very possible that Ribalta was being honest with his evaluation. It doesn't mean Holmes hit harder or even as hard as Tyson, but it does show he hit plenty hard. Like I said earlier, I think the 1 round Quarry blowout was a bit of a fluke. Shavers had punched himself out vs Lyle and it still took several bombs from Lyle to put Shavers away. Earnie was throwing haymakers at Lyle from round 1, 5 rounds of throwing big bombs like that will tire out 99% of the fighters in the world. Shavers was no exception. Couple him getting arm weary with Lyle landing several of his hardest shots, Earnie was bound to drop. Shavers was a professional fighter for less than 1 year when Stander beat him. If we're holding that against him, then we should also hold Oleg Maskaev's stoppage loss to Oliver McCall against him and Alexis Arguello's 4th round KO defeat to Omar Amaya against him. Earnie's chin was fine. It was hard to put him down. His problem was his survival skills after getting tagged hard and his stamina let him down in more than one fight.
joe lewis? you can´t even spell his name correctly and you expect that anyone take your comment seriously? uh?
