The bold is all wrong. Walcott was being cute and catching him with the right hand. Conn wasn't exactly out-jabbing Louis. It was combination punching, speed, and movement. Schemling was nailing Louis with the right hand. Not out-jabbing him.
Louis out jabbed Schmeling in their first fight, as Max expected he would, he stopped Louis ,but finished with his eye closed from Joe's jab.
Those fighers all found Louis's jab predictable and easy to evade, which is partly due to his footwork. Either way the better boxers outboxed him and Lenny has the same weapons
Did anybody ever achieve anything against Louis by sticking a jab in his face and hoping he would'nt do anything about it?
Conn and Walcott were able to avoid Louis's jab because they are two of the most mobile fighters to have contested a HW title, not because Louis's jab is ****.
I am sorry, but you do talk some ****. Walcott gave Louis problems because of his unpredictable movement, which broke up his rythmn, that and the fact, Louis was past his best. Conn was a lightning fast Light Heavy, he had terrific hand and foot speed, but his jab was NOT a big factor in their fight. Lous out jabbed Schmeling easily in their first fight, which Max predicted to his manager he would. Louis closed Max's eye with his jab. Louis's left jab was rated on a par with the average heavyweights right. Testimonies as to its effectiveness, are legion. From ,Tommy Farr,Schmeling, Marciano,Max Baer,Jimmy Braddock, and George Nicholson ,his chief sparring partner. Eddie Futch ,who sparred with Joe ,said his jab was his premier weapon. Your posts belong with, gone and not missed, Woddy's. You should pair up as a tag team. :good
No, which brings a very interesting question at debate. Does Lewis has enough weapons, or is his lack of assertiveness going to get the job done? Can he KO Louis, or even out-box him? At the same time, how poised will he feel standing toe to toe with the best finisher in HW history.
Lewis is too big to beat Louis unfortunately. Lewis will start the first few rounds, controlling the first few rounds and managing to win them. Once Louis gets closer, i am afraid, it is over. Lewis is so big that i cannot imagine him avoiding Louis's powerful punches and i dont think he'd be able to take Louis's power combination once it lands. The only chance Lewis has if early on he'd be able to catch Louis with his big right hand, but that would be risky and he could end up getting ko'd himself. I doubt Lewis would try that. Louis by late round tko
I take Lewis by late KO/stoppage. I dont mean to sound blasphemous about the great brown bomber but i just think that Lewis is too damn big for him. Ok JL also fought big guys like Abe simon and buddy baer but Lewis is a different kettle of fish to those guys. Lewis always seemed to me to just do enough when he needed to. The big guys he fought he jumped on them right away (grant, golota, ruddock) but seeing as joe was about 6ft 1in, i cant see this happening. I think lewis will exercise extreme caution and hold off Louis with that big jab. I understand Louis had a fantastic jab himself but again height and reach comes into it. If louis gets inside the jab or gets anywhere near close to lewis then im afraid he'll have 250/260lb of fighter lying all over him. I dont expect it to be a great spectacle, certainly no way will there be multiple knockdowns, both fighters will be exhausted. Lewis, with his bulk and uncertainty over being in the championship rounds for the first time, and Louis, with being smothered and lay on by a big guy for 10/11 rounds. Lewis in 11/12th round for me IMO. Apologies to the great man himself
The only thing I have to say about people with size is that Joe Louis wasn't that much smaller than Oliver McCall when he KO'ed Louis and Holyfield in the second fight with Lewis.
