Lennex Lewis had a great offence but vs the # heavyweight counter puncher Louis I would have to say Louis would prevail, Lennox never KO'd a man after 8 rounds and Louis was dangerous to the end, I do think Lewis has a punchers chance but if he goes after Joe for the KO, he may put himself in harms way, Louis was about 6"1 1/2 about the same size as McCall and Rahman but Louis was a two fisted puncher with killer instinct, late power in both hands...Lennox best chance would be to box Joe or go for the KO but it may be a mistake....Louis is my winner in this Matchup
Some good points here. Louis definately had size perameters that were comparable to fighters who either troubled or beat Lennox: Mercer, McCall, Rahman, Holyfield, etc. He also as you mentioned, was dangerous with both hands, and could knock a fighter out in any round, weather it was the 1st round or in the championship rounds. My only problem with picking Joe over Lennox, is that he also struggled or was beaten by fighters who were not in Lennox's league, ( The opposite could also be said ). The poll clearly favors Louis thus far, but I still have trouble picking him over Lennox. I suppose its a matter of opinion, and not a debate that will ever be settled easily.
If we are talking prime for prime than their stratgay and style must be conedered as much as phycical abbilities. Lewis at his best would use his reach and hight advantage to pick Louis apart. Not long ago someone posted a question of who would win between the Mongolians and someonne else I think it was the Romans but I'm not sure. Everyone who said the ongolians would win point out their use of archars. Strikeing from a distance where your opoent can not strike you works in war and in hand to hand fighiting. As well as all forms of combat in between. Lewis would be the Mongolians useing arrows (his jab) to keep Louis (The Romans) who were probbly the better army just as Louis was probbly the better boxer away while targeting him from a distance.
If Lewis's only plan is to try to keep Louis at range with his jab then he might as well not turn up for the fight because he has already lost.
Louis and Lewis were good in their eras but like other small old timers they might not do well in modern times. Wladimir Klitschko would have likely knocked out both of them.
as much as i like Joe Louis and I am not a big lennox lewis fan.Lennox knocks Joe out to big to strong
Man this one is TOUGH. Lennox sylistically isnt exactly the type of fighter that troubled Joe but due to his combo of size and talent It could be extremely difficiult. The question really is if Lennox can box from the outside and start to land conistently and cleanly on Joe. This could easily result in Louis getting knocked out. At the same time, Joe Louis' stance, method of throwing the jab, and use of baiting and feints made him extremely effective at fighting bigger men. In this way I could see Joe breaking Lennox down and getting the knockout. For me this is likea 60/40 fight for Joe Louis.
I think this would be a helluva match. I would say Joe Louis by UD or late round knockout. His combination punches taking a toll, working on stamina he would extend and have Lewis in trouble in the later rounds. I would also like to say that if Louis were fighting now, I would expect him to be around 220lbs and still retain most of his hand speed and all of his punching power. It's not merely a question of size. Lewis would hold is own because he was a great boxer, but over the course of the fight, I would expect Louis to land quite a bit, and his punches would hurt Lewis. I would not count out a Louis knockdown, but I think he would be able to get up, revive and still apply the pressure.
louis was fairly easy to hit with a good right hand cuz of his stance. lewis has a great reach advantage. lewis has to stay on the outside behind a good jab and fast right hands. louis will want to get close to lewis to do his work with fast combos. who controls this will win the fight.
Noone's stratagy would be to simpily jab, but Lewis would be putting some 250 lbs of mass behind it. Lewis;s jab would take it's tool on Louis who was at his best before World War 2 and weighed no more than 203 1/4 lbs. With Lewis useing his jab efectivly (stick and move) He would biuld upan early leed. The damage to Louis would become more aparant during the latter rounds. If Lewis can efectivly land a few jab stright right cimbos the fight will end early.
This matchup is a good argument for having a super-heavyweight division... Louis did knock out super-sized heavies Primo Carnera, Buddy Baer, Abe Simon... But Lennox Lewis would be outweighing the Brown Bomber by about 45lbs. and Lennox was a surperb athlete who moved gracefully for a man his size and had quick reflexes and fast hands... Louis will be remembered as the greater fighter historically but I don't think he wins a head to head mythical matchup with Lewis... Lewis' jab dictates the pace and remember that Lewis has similar size strength to Carnera but with elite skills... Lennox Lewis KO 8 Joe Louis
