I think a young Joe Louis had hand speed that matched Tyson's along with superior combination skills. He could also rise off the canvas to win to fights and had excellent ring generalship. The key here would be to survive Tyson's early onslaughts and lure him into deeper waters where his activity levels and mental resolve diminished considerably. From there I can see Joe Louis wearing down Tyson and hammering him for the stoppage... But it wouldn't be easy.. And when we combine the two components of Tyson being very effective in the first half a fight with Louis having the tendency to get into trouble early, there's a very real possibility that Louis could have been knocked out... Not sold an outcome either way.

Joe Louis And holyfield were like an apple And an egg. Very similar. Evander just had a much better chin

Very good post. We should consider the word of tyson.he was convinced about ali would beat him.foreman would have been a tough fight And HE WOULD HAVE KNOCKED LOUIS OUT.

    Good thread so far!

Here's my take on Tyson. I could be wrong, but I don't think Tyson can fight any other way than moving forward.

Louis can comfortably fight forwards, backwards, side to side. He has no ego about it. Louis WILL hit Tyson with big shots. And I don't think Tyson will have the wherewithal to move backwards and make adjustments. Tyson was a muscle memory fighter, not a clever thinking fighter.

As Louis stands up to Tyson, and hits him with the hardest punches he's ever taken, his morale and confidence will sink. He will not have a plan B. He will become more predictable, and Louis will deliver a devastating KO.

    Louis KO 6

It is plausible. But do you think that Louis could keep off tyson And survive the early savage attack? I doubt it... Louis got dropped And hurt by guys like buddy baer or galento... And knocked out by schmeling. I dont know why tyson could not do the same..if tyson hurts you seriously once... you losses

It's really hard to call. But Louis took some of Max Baers best shots, and instantly returned devastating punches.

Not saying Baer is Tyson, but I am saying that Louis can take a hard punch, and can return hard punches right back.

Tyson has the gift and the curse of being an intimidating fighter. He will dispose of inferior fighters in spectacular fashion. But if someone stands up to him, he loses a lot of his edge.

I think that the key is... If Louis survives the first 5 rounds it is very probable that he wins by late stoppage. Simply i cant see him surviving to a monster like tyson with his static style.we cant ignore the facts that tyson probably hits faster harder, was a bigger was of muscle And took a better shot... So if they trade blows... Louis would take the worse part

I think you've hit the nail on the head, that Tyson will have trouble beyond round 5. But he will be in dangerous territory before round 5 as well.

Tyson doesn't react well to adversity. As soon as one overhand right lands on him, and he stumbles, I think that's it. Can Tyson finish the fight before that occurs? It's possible. But if I had to put my money on this, I would put it on Louis.

Given Louis’s number of career knockdowns, I think it is reasonable to infer that Tyson had a better chin, even allowing some offset for Louis’s deeper resume.

If you graded their chins solely based on their career knockouts however, you would probably conclude that they were fairly comparable.

That is why I don’t feel inclined to give it to Tyson, solely based on his chin.

I don't know...a lot depends on intangibles for me in this fight.
Tyson never lost to a smaller man (Holy was comparable in size to Mike when they fought) and he was lethal against smaller foes.
But Louis was exceptional. One thing I know is that both men will know they have been in a fight afterwards, regardless of result.
    Tough fight to call.

I always admired Tyson's ability to find angles for his shots.his footwork, lateral and head movement were what set him apart from other shortish fighters like marciano and frazier
    In my opinion.
When he was young he had that same aura of invincibility that I remember George Foreman having and that Liston and Louis must have had

Its fine to favor Tyson. I have my doubts about Louis winning as well. But one really can't make any solid convictions one way or another the way you did above. These are two ATG's with more than enough ability to hurt the other. Louis should be given a fair chance.
