@ListontheTrash believes that “A amatuer middleweight of today would ko them” which is a wild opinion. That’s obviously absurd so how about something more realistic? How do we think Louis performs in a gauntlet of the modern heavyweight greats? Does anyone stop him?(please include reasoning)
Joe Louis loses to david haye glazed in a slavery era baer was 210 fighting bums who weighed half of his
Louis does well in any era. I do wonder how he would do against quality southpaws since there weren't many in his time. But then i wonder the exact same thing about Holmes and Lewis. Louis was 207 lbs at his peak, roughly 10-13 lbs lighter than Usyk and Holyfield. He had more power than either Usyk or Holyfield and faster hands. He didn't have the defense of Usyk and his chin probably wasn't as good as Holy but it was decent. However, given his handspeed and power, he would be a top fighter. I think he would ko Joshua and Fury. He might struggle vs Usyk though. But he was a great great fighter nonetheless.
I think Louis might be a little light in the pants for today's scene. His entire mission was to force exchanges where he'd be the bigger, faster, harder hitting guy with superior combination punching. That works well when you have the edge in those categories. On the other hand when you are fighting a series of giants things will not go well for you following that blueprint. I could see an argument for him winning individual matchups but not an entire series of fights at the highest level. If somebody says bu bu but Usyk then you have just demonstrated that YDKSAB and that you don't understand the basic questions in play here. Louis would have had to become something else entirely to fight in today's division.
He’d be even faster now, still hard hitting and a better combination puncher than even the 147lbers today. Louis could hang with anybody at any weight in terms of pure boxing why would he need to be any bigger? It isn’t required for his game. Joe proved he could hurt big guys they’re slower, easier to fatigue and today especially not so skilled.
I think Joe is pretty proven with regard to taking punishment from super heavyweights. He took a couple of clean shots from both Baer brothers even with the knockdown aside, and both of them were established punchers. I don’t think Louis crumbles against big punchers at super heavy The main issue is that we haven’t seen Louis up against a Wlad, or a Lennox, or a Fury, or even a Chisora. The most skilled super heavy he’s faced was Primo who could pretty much only jab….sometimes
I'm just not convinced he is big enough to make a career out of it. I just don't think he could blow every guy out of there in a couple of rounds, and when the menu consists of a stream of guys like Chisora, Joyce, Zhang, Dubois, AJ, Fury, Parker all of whom are 250lb plus and rugged, a lighter guy focused on trading is going to get plumb worn out. He basically can't afford to have a bad night, because a bad night against these guys is a KO loss probably followed by more.
I agree that he can't afford a bad night. However, i don't think someone as limited as Chisora or Joyce would stand a chance vs Louis. Fury, Parker, Joshua, ? Sure they have a chance. But not guys as limited as Chisora or Joyce.
The thing is these guys are iron-hard compared to most of the dudes Louis fought. Neither of them ever give up either. Louis might be able to outbox them but he's not going to, imho, be able to sit in the pocket all night and exchange.
