Ali by u dec .Conn gave Louis hell ,he was a faster better boxer than Ali,but weighed 168lbs that night.
Ali would have 44lbs on Conn,an inch and a half in height and nearly 9 inches in reach. He would also have more power.
Ali is too mobile for Joe.

I tend to go for Ali too.

Joe was a sniper who didn't throw a punch he didn't have bad intentions behind. In a way, that's both good and bad here.

There is less chance of an Ali counter-punch, but at the same time if Ali starts outscoring Joe, Louis is going to have his hands full coming back into the fight. How many times have you heard a trainer implore his fighter to let his hands go?

I think that's basically what happens here. Ali's speed, understanding of angles and judgement of distance will see him land on Joe more often than vice-versa, and Joe, because he was so economical with his punches and studious of his opponent, just does not do enough to turn the tide.

I'm sure he'd have his moments in there, particularly if Ali stops moving so much, but for me Ali would end up with a UD. Chances of Joe knocking Ali out are slim too, so a repeat of the first Conn fight is unlikely.

Louis had the right idea about how to go on about fighting Ali but whether he could execute such plan is the question.

“The kid has speed and there’s no one around to outbox him, and the opponent who tries is in his grave. Especially in the middle if the ring. I’d see to it that Clay didn’t stay in ring center. No. He’d be hit into those ropes as near a corner as I could get him. If he stayed on the ropes he would get hurt. Sooner or later he’d try to bounce off, when he did he would get hurt more. I’d press him, cut down his speed, and bang him around the ribs. I’d punish the body. “Kill the body and the head will die”, Chappie use to tell me. It figures. Sooner or later he’d forget about that face of his and he would start dropping that left hand like he did against Mildenberger and Chuvalo. Those fellows got their openings by accident, and fouled it up. I would work for it and wouldn’t reckon to miss when it arrived. Cassius Clay is a nice boy and a smart fighter. But I am sure Joe Louis would have licked him.”

    - Joe Louis in Ring Magazine 1967

Ali knew what problems he would present against Louis and would surely be exploiting his advantages to the full extent.

Ali reviews Louis's fights against Schmeling:

Believe it or not but I feel the biggest problem for Conn presented against Louis was his ability to outpunch Louis on the inside. Louis obviously wouldn't face such difficulties against Ali but instead he would be dealing with a much bigger man than Conn with many of the same abilities that Conn gave Louis trouble with. It's common knowledge that Louis was troubled by smart footwork and fast handspeed.

Louis would spend the entire fight trying to figure out Ali's style though and he could do damage to any fighter with a single punch. This added with his finishing ability makes him a danger to anybody, even Ali, who fought big punchers but never a finisher like Louis.

Pastor was elusive but being elusive didn't save him from being knocked down 5 times in the first two rounds and out for good in the 11th.

Nice Louis quote. I tend to favour Louis in this one. He holds his power late and has a very conservative style. Ali has a very flamboyant style. Louis would force him on a long march. The championship rounds might be some of the best boxing in all of history. The thing is, it's hard to pick against Ali by a KO.

Pastor was crucified for running in their first fight [Bob's bicycle act] , he stood his ground more in the return match.
Then again, Louis allways looked better the second time around.
Its not out of the question that Ali might floor Joe either.

The first fight was terrible, but while Pastor stood his ground more in the rematch, he also used a lot of tricky footwork which Louis eventually figured out. Pastor walked into a big right hand as he tried to move away from Louis.

It's not out of the question that Ali could knock down or even stop Louis but Louis would surely be the puncher in this match-up and despite Ali having taken the best of Liston, Foreman, Frazier, Shavers, he still poses some danger because of his greater finishing ability. Louis would never flail away like a madman as Foreman did, be intimidated by Ali's taunts as Shavers was or wing huge left hooks in an effort to finish off Ali as Frazier did

Joe Louis wouldn't win this Jack Blackburn would.

He would draw up a fight plan to exploit Ali's stylistic weakneses just like Eddie Futch did.

Louis would simply implement the plan to the letter.

Timing is everything thing. Louis is very underated Remember his record was 66(52KO)-3, One of his losses came at the age of 22 against a 48-7-4 prime Max Schmeling, his other 2 losses came late in his career and Joe was hit several times by very hard punchers in his KO losses.

In his prime Louis took an excellent punch and was an agressive 2 fisted combo power puncher (the Best) Joe defend his title 25 times and was the sole champ. Joe also rematched any tough fights and was always better in a rematch.

Ali was dropped by Cooper and had his hands full with Jones early in his career so we can not penalize Joe for the Schmeling loss to a prime fighter with 59 fights that was a puncher. Also Louis was not as easy to hit as Frazier without the opponent getting countered. Joe Louis was the preimier combo puncher and power counter puncher.

I think the closest opponent Ali had to Louis was a one armed Fraizer but Louis was faster and had 2 hands. Neither man faced an opponent like the other in there prime but I think Louis gets to Ali as the fight goes on.

Ali of 1965 thru '67 either wins a 12 rounder on points, or scores a late rds TKO in a 15 round fight over a 1938 to '42 Joe Louis in a time machine..... Ali wins either way.........

    Bum,

That fight of '66 or '72 doesn't mean ****............ Styles make fights...... Louis never displayed crudeness and he was NOT as tuff physically as Chuvalo ever was..... Joe Louis would NOT just move in and maul Ali in that manner......... Louis would NEVER be willing to absorb the punches that Chuvalo willingly took / accepted from Ali......... Louis would be more scientific and coached.......... Ali see's that and out-wits Louis on points or TKO.......

Very few ex-champs can or could take the punishment that Chuvalo could absorb.........
