This would be a one sided contest. Ray Mercer could hang in there with the fighters of the past few years but doing it with Joe Louis would be alot different. I see Mercer getting a drubbing from the Brown Bomber.Louis by a knockout.
Louis by wide decision after pounding Mercer over 12 or 15 rounds. After seeing Mercer survive the power of Cooper, Morrison, Lewis and Witherspoon, I'm convinced that he had the heart, guts, chin and stamina to hang in their with Louis. He would however, pay a horrible price for doing it though. By the end of the fight, Ray would be battered and swollen. I can see him having a few moments where he lands that right hand on the inside and may even stagger Joe once or twice, but in the end, Louis wins it big.
Yeah, Mercer was a durable guy at his best, he might last the distance. Louis would beat him up though, all the way.
What makes you think Louis beats him so badly, possibly stopping him, when Mercer fought Lennox Lewis to a Split Decision?
Good question. My only answer is that I think the styles are such to where Louis would be better inclined to giving Ray a beating. Lennox was a better boxer than Joe Louis was, but when it came to throwing combinations on the inside, Louis was the king, or at least I think he was. Mercer struggled with inside type fighters. Bert Cooper gave Mercer a hell of a lot of trouble as did Ferguson. Ray would have his moments, but I still think that he'd take a horrific beating. By the way, although Mercer fought Lewis to a close decision like you say, we also have to acknowledge that he lost big to a 42 year old Holmes, and a Jesse Ferguson when he was at or near his best. NOTE- I realize he was injured prior to fighting Ferguson, but the fact still stands that he lost to a very mediocre journeyman when in his prime.
Lennox was better at neautralizing an opponent's game than Louis was, so I see the inside exchanges being pretty competitive. Joe is the better puncher, Mercer has by far the better chin. I think he could take Joe's punches for the most part, but in a trade-off, I am not sure Joe doesn't go down at least once. I would have to take Joe, based on the better, more accurate punches, though an upset is possible. Based on styles, this is why I don't include Louis in my top head to head Heavyweights.
Joe beats Mercer to a pulp, Joe much better boxer, better puncher, quicker, late tko or 15 ud Ray looks like mack truck run him over after fight.
Remember the beating Morrison gave Mercer the first 3 rounds. This fight would look a lot like that, all fight long. I really can't see this going past 10, and I feel I'm being generous due to Mercer's great durability. I don't even know if Tex Cobb could go the distance with Joe. Louis by ugly stoppage.
I don't think Louis had the speed, defensively or offensively of Morrison, to bob and weave shots, and land his shots as quickly. He had the accuracy and power though, but I think it would be closer in terms of speed, which gives Mercer a better chance. Also, Morrison was quite a bit bigger. Still, I'd give the edge to Louis.
Oh I forgot, Louis is an old school fighter whom no criticism exists for, so he's automatically faster than any new school fighter, despite the fact that one of the knocks on him has always been his speed(although not handspeed).
