That Louis left hook was still a potent punch. He looked good against Savold. I wonder who would win the Louis from the Savold fight or The Dempsey from the Sharkey fight.

 

Layne was considered the next Heavyweight champ by Nat Fliecher, Rex was 34-1 going into the Marciano fight and he avenged his only loss. The Marciano KO loss had to be a tough one to recover from that was not just a KO, that was a shotgun blast

 

Fair question ... looking at it a prime , 24 year old Sharkey was light years better than any Savold, let alone the old one Louis and Rocky fought ...

I like Dempsey because without his speed, Louis would get massacred by Jack ..

 

Not sure, Louis was the master of the quick,powerful and precise combo.He could hurt you bad with one punch but would follow up with a 6-piece Although it was one left hook that stopped the crafty roller Savold. Dempsey may have hit harder with one punch but Louis was a master counter puncher. Dempsey showed rust vs Sharkey but the hook was potent. Louis was not prime and showed rust but still a dangerous puncher and experience fighter. Would be interesting at that stage of their careers.

 

Funny but in the 230's Louis still looked more fit than many fighters of the 80's(Witherspoon,Page,Tubbs,etc.) and present day (Peter,Areola,etc.) but he chose to train down to a lower weight. Modern thinking in the heavyweight class is a older fighter gains some weight as he ages. Louis at 230, did not look fat, he looked fit but I guess it was not fit enough for him.
